Flashcards for parents
What you can see of your child's flashcards, the reminders and how to turn them off, what needs a subject seat, using cards in Claude and ChatGPT, and what happens to the data.
On this page
Flashcards are your child's own study material. This page covers the parts that concern you: what you can see, what you will be told, what is included in your plan, and what happens to the cards.
What you can see
On your dashboard. Once your child has a deck, the overview shows a Flashcards card for them with:
- how many decks they have in each subject;
- how many reviews they have done this week;
- when they last reviewed;
- any cards they have shared to the Shared Sky, with a button to unpublish each one.
In the learning activity log. Under Reports, each day shows how many cards were reviewed and how many your child made. Filter by "Flashcards only" to see just these.
In the Monday email. The weekly digest has a short flashcards section: what was reviewed, the result of the latest practice run and the topics it went thin on, and any exam the cards are now timed towards. In a quiet week it says so plainly and without blame.
The cards themselves. The dashboard pages show counts, not card text. To read the actual cards, open Data & privacy in your dashboard and choose Download my workspace. The download includes one file per deck, with every card and how often it has been reviewed.
Reminders
A cards due reminder is only ever created when your child really has cards waiting. If nothing is due, nothing is sent.
| Who | How often | |
|---|---|---|
| Your child | Daily, when cards are due | Only if your child has a verified email address of their own. Otherwise it appears in their messages on the site. |
| You | Weekly, when cards are due | Off unless you turn it on. The note still appears in your Messages. |
To change either, open Messages in your dashboard and go to its preferences. Each kind of message has an email tick and can be switched off. Your child has their own two switches, for cards due and for celebrations, on their messages page.
What needs a subject seat
There is no separate price for flashcards. What your child can do depends on the subjects you have chosen for them (see choosing subjects per child).
| Action | Needs a seat in that subject? |
|---|---|
| Reviewing cards they already have | No |
| Adopting a deck or a card from the Atlas | No |
| Adopting a card from the Shared Sky | No |
| A professor making cards in a session | Yes |
| Making cards from notes, by hand or by import | Yes |
| Making or adopting a revision pack | Yes |
| Setting an exam date for a subject's cards | Yes |
| Making, reading or reviewing cards through Claude or ChatGPT | Yes |
Making cards from notes also counts towards the same daily fair-use allowance as tutoring.
If you remove a subject, your child's existing cards in it are not deleted.
In Claude and ChatGPT
If your family uses the tutors through Claude or ChatGPT, the same cards are there:
- Making cards. After a session is logged, the professor can save up to eight cards into your child's Flashcards on aitutors.me.
- Reading cards. The professor can pull up your child's recent decks, or the cards due today, to talk them through.
- Drilling cards. The professor can run a drill of up to ten due cards. Your child says how each one went and that answer counts, exactly as it would on the site. Where the app supports it, the drill opens as a tap-to-flip panel.
In every case the grade is your child's own report. The professor does not mark the cards.
Your child's data
- Cards are kept until you remove them. They are not cleared with tutoring conversations, so a card outlives the chat it was made in.
- Uploads used to make cards are not kept. A photo or PDF is read once and let go.
- Your child can take a copy. Take my cards with me on My Flashcards downloads their cards as a spreadsheet file (CSV), and nothing is removed by doing so.
- Archiving a child keeps their cards. Deleting your account deletes them.
- A shared card shows a first name and year group only. See the Shared Sky.
Common questions
Do flashcards cost extra? No. There is no separate charge. Some actions need a seat in the subject, as the table above shows.
How long should review take? Usually a few minutes a day. The page shows an estimate before your child starts. A child who has just adopted several decks will have more for a while.
My child has a big pile. What should they do? Do what is there over a few days, or put away the cards they do not need. Cards are never lost by waiting.
Can my child lose their cards by mistake? The only cards a child can delete are their own unfinished drafts. Everything else is "put away", which can always be reversed.
Something on a card is wrong. What do we do? Your child can put it away with Something looks wrong, which also tells us, or ask the professor about it in a session.
