为什么Zoom in: the leaf is an organ, its palisade cells are packed with chloroplasts, and inside each one chlorophyll traps light to join carbon dioxide and water into glucose. The oxygen is a by-product the plant vents through its stomata — and it is the oxygen every animal on Earth breathes. Set it beside aerobic respiration (glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water) and you will see the same reaction run in opposite directions; the Challenge loves asking which is which.

为什么Cells release carbon dioxide during aerobic respiration (glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water), which runs day and night in plant and animal cells alike; green leaves take it in for photosynthesis, which runs only in the light. So a plant is a net taker of carbon dioxide by day and a net giver by night. This pairing is also the engine of the carbon cycle: carbon moves from the air into sugar, from plant into animal, and back to the air again.

为什么A specialised cell is the organism’s problem solved at the smallest scale. The plant needs water and minerals from soil, so cells just behind each root tip grow a hair-like extension that multiplies their surface area. Water enters by osmosis, from the dilute soil water into the more concentrated cell; minerals are taken in using energy from respiration, so these cells are also rich in mitochondria. Every specialised cell tells the same story: shape follows job.

为什么Digestion is chemical as well as mechanical. Amylase in saliva starts turning starch into maltose while you chew, and the pancreas adds more in the small intestine. Two other families finish the job: proteases break protein into amino acids, and lipase breaks fat into fatty acids and glycerol. Each enzyme fits one substrate, so a multiple-choice option that pairs amylase with protein is a trap.

为什么Aerobic respiration needs oxygen; when a sprinting muscle cannot get enough, it switches to anaerobic respiration — glucose → lactic acid — which releases far less energy per glucose. The lactic acid must be broken down afterwards, which is why you keep panting once you stop: you are paying off the oxygen debt. Yeast respires anaerobically differently, glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide (fermentation), which is what makes bread rise.

The right side sends blood on the short trip to the lungs; the left side sends it round the whole body, so the left ventricle has by far the thickest muscular wall. Remember that left means the patient’s left — on a diagram facing you it sits on the right. The Biology Challenge is two 25-minute online papers, so a labelled heart is exactly the kind of quick question to expect.

为什么Blood is a tissue in transit: red blood cells carry oxygen, white blood cells fight infection, platelets clot wounds, and plasma carries everything else — dissolved food, carbon dioxide, hormones and heat. A red blood cell drops its nucleus to make room for haemoglobin and takes a biconcave shape to widen its surface area: a cell so specialised it lives only about 120 days before the spleen recycles it.

为什么Nothing in the bacteria decided to resist. In any large population a few cells already carry a chance mutation that lets them survive the drug; the antibiotic kills the rest, the survivors multiply, and the next generation is mostly resistant. Variation, selection, inheritance — Darwin’s three ingredients, only with a generation time of twenty minutes instead of twenty years. The same logic explains the peppered moth and the beaks of the Galápagos finches.

为什么A food-chain arrow means “is eaten by”, so it always points from prey to predator: grass → rabbit → fox. Only a small fraction of what each level holds passes to the next — most is lost as heat from respiration, in movement and in waste — which is why chains are short and a pyramid of biomass narrows towards the top. Count the levels above a producer and you can see how thin the supply has become.

Which type of pathogen causes influenza?

为什么Pathogens come in four kinds: bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists. Flu, colds, measles and COVID-19 are viral; tuberculosis and Salmonella food poisoning are bacterial; athlete’s foot is fungal; malaria is caused by a protist. Antibiotics kill bacteria only, which is why a doctor will not prescribe them for flu — and why taking them when they cannot help breeds resistant bacteria. Against a virus the main tools are vaccination and your own immune system; a few antiviral drugs exist but no antibiotic helps.

为什么Vertebrates come in five classes: fish (gills, scales), amphibians (moist skin, larvae in water), reptiles (dry scaly skin, shelled eggs on land), birds (feathers, hard-shelled eggs) and mammals (fur, milk). Amphibians are the bridge: a frog begins as a gilled tadpole and ends as a lung-breathing adult, which is why it must return to water to breed. The Challenge enjoys natural-history questions like this alongside the textbook biology.
