water; glucose; oxygen; chlorophyll
提示Word equation for how a leaf makes its food — think what goes in, what comes out, and what does the catching.
为什么Zoom in: the leaf is an organ, its palisade cells are packed with chloroplasts, and inside each one chlorophyll traps light to join carbon dioxide and water into glucose. The oxygen is a by-product the plant vents through its stomata — and it is the oxygen every animal on Earth breathes. Set it beside aerobic respiration (glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water) and you will see the same reaction run in opposite directions; the Challenge loves asking which is which.
