1 GCSE-PHYS-FOR-0103

The mass of a moving object multiplied by its velocity

Momentum

提示It is measured in kg m/s.

为什么In symbols, p = m v, with p in kilogram metres per second, m in kilograms and v in metres per second. AQA expects this equation to be recalled. Because velocity has a direction, this quantity is a vector too.

2 GCSE-PHYS-FOR-0104

A sprinter of mass 60 kg runs at 9 m/s. Calculate her momentum in kg m/s. (number only)

540

提示Multiply the two numbers you have been given.

为什么Momentum = mass × velocity, p = m v = 60 × 9. The unit comes from multiplying the units: kilograms × metres per second gives kg m/s. The equation must be recalled.

3 GCSE-PHYS-FOR-0105

A ball of mass 0.4 kg has a momentum of 6 kg m/s. Calculate its velocity.

15 m/s

提示Rearrange the momentum equation so that velocity stands alone.

为什么p = m v rearranges to v = p ÷ m = 6 ÷ 0.4. Dividing by a number less than one makes the answer bigger: a light ball must move quickly to carry this much momentum.

4 GCSE-PHYS-FOR-0106

Two identical 2 kg trolleys roll towards each other, each at 3 m/s. Taking motion to the right as positive, what is the momentum of each trolley, and what is their total momentum?

+6 kg m/s and −6 kg m/s; the total is zero

提示Give the trolley moving to the left a negative velocity.

为什么Momentum is a vector, so direction matters. The trolley moving right has p = 2 × 3 = +6 kg m/s; the one moving left has p = 2 × (−3) = −6 kg m/s. Adding them gives zero, even though both trolleys are moving.

5 GCSE-PHYS-FOR-0107

A 20 000 kg lorry is parked at the roadside while a 0.06 kg tennis ball rolls past it. Which of the two has more momentum?

The tennis ball — the parked lorry has none

提示Check the velocity of each before you look at the masses.

为什么Momentum = mass × velocity, so an object that is not moving has zero momentum however large its mass. Momentum is a property of moving objects only. The ball's momentum is tiny, but it is still more than nothing.

6 GCSE-PHYS-FOR-0108

The rule that, when no outside forces act, the combined momentum of a set of objects is the same after a collision or explosion as it was before

Conservation of momentum

提示The rule for energy has the same first word: a total that never changes.

为什么An 'event' is usually a collision or an explosion. Individual objects may speed up, slow down or reverse, but when every object's momentum is added together, with direction taken into account, the total is the same afterwards as before.

7 GCSE-PHYS-FOR-0109

Momentum is conserved in a ____ system: add up the momentum of every object before a collision, and the total is ____ to the total afterwards.

closed; equal

提示The first describes a system that nothing outside is pushing or pulling on.

为什么A system of this kind is one on which no external forces act, so its objects affect only each other. Two trolleys on a low-friction track are close to this. If an outside force such as friction is significant, it changes the total momentum and the rule no longer holds exactly.

8 GCSE-PHYS-FOR-0110

A skater standing still on smooth ice throws a heavy ball forwards. Use momentum to explain why she slides backwards.

The total momentum must stay zero, so she gains momentum equal to the ball's but in the opposite direction

提示Add up what is moving before the throw.

为什么Before the throw neither the skater nor the ball is moving, so the total momentum is zero. Afterwards the ball has forward momentum, and the total can only still be zero if the skater has the same amount backwards. She has more mass than the ball, so she moves more slowly than it does.

9 GCSE-PHYS-FOR-0111

A moving trolley collides with an identical stationary trolley and the two stick together. Use momentum to explain why they move off more slowly than the first trolley was moving.

The same total momentum is now shared by twice the mass

提示Ask how much more material is moving afterwards.

为什么Total momentum is conserved in the collision. Before, all of it belonged to one trolley; afterwards the same amount is carried by two trolleys' worth of mass. With the mass doubled and momentum unchanged, the velocity must halve.

10 GCSE-PHYS-FOR-0112

Just before two trolleys collide on a low-friction track, trolley A has a momentum of 8 kg m/s to the right and trolley B has a momentum of 3 kg m/s to the left. No external forces act. What is the total momentum of the two trolleys after the collision?

5 kg m/s to the right

提示Find the total before the collision, taking direction into account.

为什么Taking right as positive, the total before is 8 + (−3) = 5 kg m/s to the right. In a closed system the total momentum after an event equals the total before, so it is still 5 kg m/s to the right, however the two trolleys share it.
