1 KS3-HIST-EVI-0023

Which century does the year 1066 belong to?

The eleventh century

提示Years 1 to 100 make the first of these periods of 100 years.

为什么The eleventh century runs from AD 1001 to AD 1100. A year ending in 01 to 00 belongs to the century numbered one higher than its first two digits.

2 KS3-HIST-EVI-0024

Which came first: the sealing of Magna Carta or the Black Death in England?

Magna Carta

提示One happened in the thirteenth century and the other in the fourteenth.

为什么Magna Carta was sealed in 1215. The Black Death reached England in 1348, more than a century later.

3 KS3-HIST-EVI-0025

How many years passed between the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and Magna Carta in 1215? (number only)

149

提示Subtract the earlier year from the later one.

为什么1215 − 1066 = 149. Subtracting works whenever both years are AD.

4 KS3-HIST-EVI-0026

Which monarch gives the "Victorian" period its name?

Queen Victoria

提示Period labels are often taken from the ruler of the time.

为什么Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901, so "Victorian" describes that period. Not every period label comes from a monarch: "medieval" simply means "middle ages".

5 KS3-HIST-EVI-0027

An emperor ordered a monument celebrating his own victory. Why should a historian be careful with it?

Its maker wanted to impress, so it may leave out failures

提示Think about who paid for it and why.

为什么Asking "why was this made?" is part of provenance. A monument made to boast is good evidence of what the emperor wanted people to believe, but a poor guide to what really happened.

6 KS3-HIST-EVI-0028

Why does it matter who a source was made FOR?

The audience shapes what the maker says or leaves out

提示You write differently to a friend than to a headteacher.

为什么A letter to a parent, a report to a commander and a public poster all say different things about the same events.

7 KS3-HIST-EVI-0029

A letter written in 1940 by a child evacuee is what kind of source about the Second World War?

A primary source

提示Was it made at the time, or looking back later?

为什么A primary source comes from the time being studied. A history book written in 2020 about evacuees would be secondary.

8 KS3-HIST-EVI-0030

When you make an inference from a source, what must you point to in order to support it?

A detail in the source

提示You need something you can actually see or read.

为什么An inference is a judgement from clues, so you should always name the clue. Without it, the inference is just a guess.

9 KS3-HIST-EVI-0031

"The map shows a bridge." Is that an observation or an inference?

An observation

提示Is it something you can see, or something you worked out?

为什么An observation says what the source shows directly. "The town needed to cross a river" would be an inference, because the map does not say it outright.

10 KS3-HIST-EVI-0032

What does a blue plaque on a building usually mark?

That a notable person lived or worked there

提示It is a small round sign on the outside wall.

为什么In England the blue plaque scheme marks buildings linked with famous people. Local clues like these show history you can walk past.
