1 GCSE-CHEM-PAR-0001

The kind of distillation, using a tall column above the flask, that separates liquids whose boiling points are close together

Fractional distillation

提示Crude oil is split into petrol, diesel and other parts this way; the name comes from a word for a part of a whole.

为什么In the column the vapours cool and condense many times over, so the liquid with the lower boiling point reaches the top first and the rest runs back down. Simple distillation, with no column, is enough when one substance boils far below the other, as with water and dissolved salt.

2 GCSE-CHEM-PAR-0002

A mixture of ethanol (boils at 78 °C) and water (boils at 100 °C) is separated by fractional distillation. Which liquid is collected first?

Ethanol

提示The one that turns to vapour at the lower temperature gets to the top of the column first.

为什么As the flask warms, the liquid with the lower boiling point evaporates more readily, so its vapour is the first to pass over the top of the column and into the condenser. Most of the water vapour condenses in the column and runs back into the flask.

3 GCSE-CHEM-PAR-0003

Filtration, crystallisation, distillation and chromatography involve no chemical reaction and make no new substance, so they are described as ____ processes.

physical

提示The opposite kind of process would be a reaction.

为什么The substances in a mixture are not chemically joined, so no reaction is needed to part them. Each method uses a difference in a property such as particle size, solubility or boiling point. A compound is different: its elements can only be separated by chemical reactions.

4 GCSE-CHEM-PAR-0004

Black ink is a coloured solid dissolved in water. A pupil wants to collect the pure water from it, not the colour. Should she use crystallisation or simple distillation?

Simple distillation

提示One of these methods lets the solvent escape into the room; the other catches it.

为什么Both methods separate a dissolved solid from its solvent, but they keep different parts. Crystallisation lets the water evaporate away and keeps the solid. Simple distillation boils the water off, then cools the vapour in a condenser so that the water itself is collected.

5 GCSE-CHEM-PAR-0005

In air, oxygen is mixed with nitrogen, not chemically combined with it. Things burn in air as they do in pure oxygen, only more slowly. What does this show about a substance that is part of a mixture?

It keeps its own chemical properties

提示Compare with water, where the oxygen is combined with hydrogen and nothing will burn in it.

为什么In a mixture each substance is still itself, so it reacts just as it would alone; mixing only dilutes it. In a compound the elements are chemically joined, and the compound has new properties of its own.

6 GCSE-CHEM-PAR-0006

A substance melts at −7 °C and boils at 59 °C. What state is it in at 25 °C? (one word)

Liquid

提示Place 25 °C on a number line with the two change points marked on it.

为什么Below its melting point a substance is solid, above its boiling point it is a gas, and in between it is a liquid. 25 °C lies between −7 °C and 59 °C. (These are the figures for bromine.)

7 GCSE-CHEM-PAR-0007

Substance A melts at 801 °C. Substance B melts at −182 °C. What does this tell you about the forces between the particles in A compared with those in B?

They are much stronger in A

提示Ask which one needs more energy before its particles can break out of their fixed positions.

为什么The stronger the forces between the particles, the more energy is needed to separate them, so the higher the melting and boiling points. How strong the forces are depends on the type of bonding and structure. (A is sodium chloride; B is methane.)

8 GCSE-CHEM-PAR-0008

A single atom of gold is not shiny, not yellow and cannot be hammered flat. Why not?

These are bulk properties of many atoms together, not of one atom

提示Think about what you would need a large crowd of before such features could show up at all.

为什么Colour, shine, hardness, melting point and conductivity all come from the way huge numbers of atoms are arranged and held together. One atom on its own has none of them.

9 GCSE-CHEM-PAR-0009

When a liquid boils, the energy supplied is used to overcome the ____ between its particles.

forces

提示It is whatever was holding the particles close to one another.

为什么Heating gives the particles more energy. At the boiling point this energy goes into separating the particles from one another, which is why substances with strong attractions between their particles need more energy and boil at higher temperatures.

10 GCSE-CHEM-PAR-0010

Apart from what it leaves out between the particles, the simple particle model is limited in the way it draws each particle. What are these two limitations?

Every particle is shown as a sphere, and the spheres are solid

提示Both are about how each one is drawn: its outline, and what it is like inside.

为什么Real particles are atoms, ions or molecules. Many are not round, and none is a solid ball. Leaving these details out keeps the model simple, but it limits what the model can explain.

11 GCSE-CHEM-PAR-0011

Why can the simple particle model not explain why different substances melt and boil at different temperatures?

It has no forces between the particles

提示Ask what decides how much energy it takes to pull one sphere away from its neighbours.

为什么Melting and boiling points depend on how strongly the particles attract each other. A model in which the spheres do not attract at all cannot say why one substance needs more energy to change state than another.
