- A compound whose molecules are made of hydrogen atoms and carbon atoms only
A hydrocarbon
提示The name is built from the names of the two elements.
为什么The word 'only' matters: a hydrocarbon contains no other element at all. Most of the compounds in crude oil are hydrocarbons.
- Which one of these is a hydrocarbon: CO2, C3H8, C2H6O, H2O?
C3H8
提示Look for the formula with exactly two elements in it, and the right two.
为什么C3H8 contains carbon and hydrogen and nothing else. CO2 has no hydrogen, H2O has no carbon, and C2H6O has both but also contains oxygen.
- Crude oil contains a very large number of different compounds that are not chemically joined to each other. Is crude oil an element, a compound or a mixture? (one word)
Mixture
提示Its parts can be separated by a physical method, distillation.
为什么Because the compounds in crude oil are only mixed, not bonded to each other, each keeps its own boiling point. That is what allows them to be separated by fractional distillation.
- Crude oil is the remains of ancient plankton. What covered the remains on the sea bed, so that they were buried instead of rotting away?
Mud (layers of sediment)
提示It is fine, wet and soft, and over time it hardens into rock.
为什么Buried and compressed over millions of years, the remains of this ancient biomass turned into crude oil, which is now found in rocks. Because it forms so slowly, it is a finite resource.
- Most of the hydrocarbons in crude oil belong to one family, which has the general formula CnH2n+2. What is this family called? (one word)
Alkanes
提示Its members include methane and propane; the family name shares their ending.
为什么The alkanes are a family of hydrocarbons that all fit one general formula. The smallest is methane, CH4, the main gas in natural gas.
- The general formula of the alkanes is CnH2n+2. How many hydrogen atoms are there in a molecule of the alkane with 6 carbon atoms? (number only)
14
提示Put 6 in place of n, double it, then add two.
为什么The number of hydrogen atoms is 2n + 2. With n = 6 that is 2 × 6 + 2 = 14, so the formula is C6H14.
- In order of increasing size, the first four alkanes are methane, ____, ____ and butane.
ethane; propane
提示Their molecules have two and three carbon atoms.
为什么Methane has one carbon atom, ethane two, propane three and butane four. These four are the only alkane names that have to be known.
- The alkane with the molecular formula C4H10
Butane
提示It is the fourth member of the family, and the fuel in many camping stoves.
为什么The formula fits CnH2n+2 with n = 4: 2 × 4 + 2 = 10 hydrogen atoms. Written on one line to show the chain, butane is CH3CH2CH2CH3.
- A hydrocarbon has the formula C7H16. Is it an alkane? Show how you can tell.
Yes: 2 × 7 + 2 = 16, so it fits CnH2n+2
提示Test the numbers of the two kinds of atom against the general formula.
为什么An alkane with n carbon atoms has 2n + 2 hydrogen atoms. With n = 7 that predicts 16, which matches, so C7H16 is an alkane (its name, heptane, is not needed).
- The displayed formula of ethane, C2H6, shows every covalent bond as a line between two atoms. How many lines are drawn in total? (number only)
7
提示Count the bonds to hydrogen, then add the bond that joins the carbon atoms.
为什么Each of the 6 hydrogen atoms is joined to a carbon atom by one bond, and the two carbon atoms are joined to each other by one more: 6 + 1 = 7. Written on one line, ethane is CH3CH3.
- A group of hydrocarbons with a similar number of carbon atoms, collected together when crude oil is distilled
A fraction (of crude oil)
提示The word also means a part of a whole in mathematics.
为什么Crude oil contains too many compounds to separate one by one, so it is split into groups. The molecules in one fraction are of similar size, so they have similar boiling points and condense together.
- In fractional distillation, crude oil is heated until most of it evaporates, and the vapours rise up a tall column that is cooler towards the top. What happens to each hydrocarbon as it rises?
It cools and condenses, at a height that depends on its boiling point
提示Each vapour turns back into a liquid somewhere on the way up.
为什么A vapour condenses when it reaches a part of the column that is cooler than its boiling point. Different hydrocarbons therefore turn to liquid at different heights, where they are collected as separate fractions.
- In the fractionating column, are the hydrocarbons with the smallest molecules collected near the top or near the bottom, and why?
Near the top: their boiling points are the lowest
提示These stay as gases the longest while the vapour cools.
为什么The column is hottest at the bottom and coolest at the top. Small molecules have low boiling points, so they do not condense until they reach the cool upper part; the largest molecules condense low down, or never evaporate at all.
- The fractions from crude oil are processed to produce ____ and ____ for the petrochemical industry.
fuels; feedstock
提示One is burned for energy; the other is the raw material that chemical plants are 'fed' with.
为什么The fuels include petrol, diesel oil, kerosene, heavy fuel oil and liquefied petroleum gases. Feedstock is turned into other useful materials: solvents, lubricants, polymers and detergents.
- What ability of carbon atoms explains why there is such a vast array of carbon compounds?
Carbon atoms can bond to each other in chains and rings, forming families of similar compounds
提示Consider how this element behaves towards more of itself.
为什么Because carbon atoms link to one another, a molecule can have a carbon skeleton of almost any length or shape. Each pattern gives a family of similar compounds, such as the alkanes.
