- What is the chemical formula of glucose?
C₆H₁₂O₆
提示Three elements: six atoms of the first, twelve of the second, six of the third.
为什么Glucose is the sugar made in photosynthesis and used in respiration. Its molecule contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. AQA expects you to recognise this formula alongside CO₂, H₂O and O₂.
- Photosynthesis takes in energy from its surroundings. Which word describes a reaction of this type? (one word)
endothermic
提示The first part of the word means 'inside' or 'into'.
为什么In photosynthesis, energy is transferred from the environment to the chloroplasts by light. Respiration is the opposite kind of reaction: it transfers energy out to the surroundings.
- In photosynthesis, how is energy transferred from the environment to the chloroplasts?
By light
提示Think about what a plant kept in a dark cupboard is missing.
为什么Chlorophyll in the chloroplasts absorbs the energy, which is then used to make glucose from carbon dioxide and water. Without this supply of energy, the reaction cannot happen.
- In symbols, photosynthesis uses ____ and H₂O to make C₆H₁₂O₆ and ____.
CO₂; O₂
提示One is the gas a plant takes in through its stomata; the other is the gas it gives out.
为什么This is the word equation written with chemical symbols: carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen. AQA asks you to recognise the four symbols, not to balance the equation.
- In the photosynthesis equation, 'light' is written above the arrow, not on the left with carbon dioxide and water. Why?
Light supplies the energy; it is not a substance that is used up
提示Reactants are made of atoms. Ask whether this one is.
为什么The left-hand side of an equation lists the substances whose atoms are rearranged into the products. Light contributes no atoms. It is the energy input that drives the reaction, so it is shown as a condition.
- A factor that holds back the rate of a process because it is in short supply
A limiting factor
提示The first word of the term says what it does to the rate.
为什么For photosynthesis the factors are temperature, light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and the amount of chlorophyll. Whichever is in shortest supply sets the rate; increasing any other one makes no difference.
- A graph of rate of photosynthesis against light intensity rises in a straight line from the origin, then curves over and becomes a flat, horizontal line. What does the flat part show?
Light is no longer the limiting factor
提示On the flat part, giving the plant more of what is on the x-axis changes nothing.
为什么While the line is rising, more light gives more photosynthesis, so light is what is holding the rate back. Once the line is flat, something else, such as carbon dioxide concentration or temperature, is in short supply.
- Raising the temperature speeds up photosynthesis at first. Why does the rate fall if the plant gets too hot?
The enzymes that control photosynthesis are denatured
提示The process is a series of reactions, each needing a protein catalyst with a precise shape.
为什么At low temperatures the particles move slowly, so the reactions are slow. Warming speeds them up, but beyond the optimum the enzymes change shape and stop working, so the rate drops sharply.
- Some leaves have pale patches, either naturally or because of disease. Why do the pale patches photosynthesise more slowly than the green parts?
They contain less chlorophyll, so they absorb less light
提示Ask what gives a leaf its green colour, and what that substance is for.
为什么Chlorophyll is the pigment that absorbs the light energy for photosynthesis. The amount of it is one of the four factors that affect the rate. Diseases such as tobacco mosaic virus, and a shortage of minerals, can reduce it.
- In the pondweed practical, a lamp is placed at different distances and the bubbles of gas are counted. Moving the lamp closer could also warm the water. Why would that make the results invalid?
Temperature also affects the rate, so two variables would be changing at once
提示A fair test changes one thing only.
为什么The independent variable is light intensity. Temperature and carbon dioxide concentration are control variables and must be kept the same, for example by using a lamp that gives out little heat, or by standing the tube in a large beaker of water.
- In the pondweed practical, a piece of pondweed releases 36 bubbles of oxygen in 3 minutes. What is its rate of photosynthesis in bubbles per minute? (number only)
12
提示A rate is an amount divided by the time it took.
为什么Rate = number of bubbles ÷ time = 36 ÷ 3. Counting bubbles is quick but rough, because bubbles differ in size; collecting the gas and measuring its volume gives a more accurate rate.
- A graph shows rate of photosynthesis against light intensity as two curves, one for plants in 0.04% carbon dioxide and one for plants in 0.4%. Both rise together along the same line, then each becomes flat, the 0.4% curve at a higher rate. On the flat part of the 0.04% curve, which factor is limiting, and how can you tell?
Carbon dioxide concentration: giving more of it raises the rate, while giving more light does not
提示Compare the two flat lines and ask what is different between them.
为什么A flat line means more light makes no difference, so light is not limiting there. The other curve shows that with ten times the carbon dioxide the rate goes higher, so on the lower curve it is the gas that is in short supply.
- On the same graph, the curves for 0.04% and 0.4% carbon dioxide lie on top of each other at low light intensities, rising together. Which factor is limiting in that region?
Light intensity
提示In this region, ten times as much of the gas makes no difference at all to the rate.
为什么Where the two curves coincide, the rate depends only on how bright it is, and it rises as the brightness rises. Extra carbon dioxide cannot help because there is not enough energy arriving to use it.
- Light intensity is inversely proportional to the ____ of the distance from the lamp.
square
提示As a relationship it is written: intensity ∝ 1/d².
为什么This is the inverse square law. Light spreads out in all directions, so at twice the distance the same light covers four times the area. It explains why moving a lamp a little further from a plant cuts the light it receives so sharply.
- A lamp is moved from 10 cm to 20 cm away from a piece of pondweed. Using the inverse square law, by what number is the light intensity at the pondweed divided? (number only)
4
提示Work out how many times further away the lamp now is, then apply the law's power to that.
为什么The distance has doubled. Light intensity ∝ 1/d², so the intensity is divided by 2² = 4: the pondweed now receives a quarter of the light it did.
- Extra lighting in a greenhouse costs a grower £120 a week and increases the value of the crop by £90 a week. Is the lighting cost-effective, and by how much does the weekly profit change?
No: the profit falls by £30 a week
提示Compare what is spent with what is gained.
为什么The gain of £90 is less than the cost of £120, so the profit changes by 90 − 120 = −£30 a week. Growers raise light, temperature or carbon dioxide only while the extra yield is worth more than it costs. If another factor becomes limiting, a further increase adds little or no yield and the money is wasted.
