先在心里作答…In the density equation used at GCSE, mass is in kilograms and volume is in metres cubed. What unit does that give for density?
轻点看答案

★ GCSE-PHYS-MAT-0001正面

Physics · Matter and particles, Year 10: density and internal energyProfessor Newton

Kilograms per metre cubed (kg/m³)

提示Divide the unit on top of the fraction by the unit underneath.

为什么Density = mass ÷ volume, or ρ = m ÷ V, an equation AQA expects pupils to recall. A unit of mass divided by a unit of volume gives the unit of density. Water is 1000 kg/m³, which is the same as 1 g/cm³.

先在心里作答…Petrol has a density of 750 kg/m³. What volume does 150 kg of petrol take up?

★ GCSE-PHYS-MAT-0002正面

Physics · Matter and particles, Year 10: density and internal energyProfessor Newton

0.2 m³

提示Rearrange the equation so that the unknown is on its own, then check which number goes underneath.

为什么Rearranging ρ = m ÷ V gives V = m ÷ ρ = 150 ÷ 750. The answer is less than one cubic metre, which makes sense: a whole cubic metre of petrol would have a mass of 750 kg.

先在心里作答…In the density practical, a displacement can is used to find the volume of a pebble. Before the pebble is lowered in, the can is filled until water just stops dripping from its spout. Why?
轻点看答案

★ GCSE-PHYS-MAT-0003正面

Physics · Matter and particles, Year 10: density and internal energyProfessor Newton

So that all the water the pebble pushes aside runs out and is collected

提示Think about what would happen if the level began a little below the spout.

为什么The volume of water that overflows into the measuring cylinder equals the volume of the pebble, but only if the water level starts exactly at the spout. If it starts lower, some of the rise is hidden inside the can and the measured volume is too small, which makes the calculated density too large. This is part of AQA required practical 17.

多处填空先在心里作答…An empty measuring cylinder has a mass of 80 g. With 50 cm³ of oil in it, the mass is 125 g. The mass of the oil alone is ____ g, so the density of the oil is ____ g/cm³.

★ GCSE-PHYS-MAT-0004正面

Physics · Matter and particles, Year 10: density and internal energyProfessor Newton

45; 0.9

提示The balance weighed the glass as well as the liquid.

为什么Mass of oil = 125 − 80. Density = mass ÷ volume = 45 ÷ 50. Weighing the container empty and then with the liquid in it, and subtracting, is how the density of a liquid is found in required practical 17.

先在心里作答…In the density practical, the thickness of a thin, regularly shaped sheet of metal has to be measured. Why is a micrometer or Vernier callipers used instead of a ruler?
轻点看答案

★ GCSE-PHYS-MAT-0005正面

Physics · Matter and particles, Year 10: density and internal energyProfessor Newton

They measure to a much smaller fraction of a millimetre

提示A ruler's smallest division is a large slice of something only a couple of millimetres thick.

为什么A ruler reads to the nearest millimetre, which could be half the thickness of the sheet. A micrometer reads to a hundredth of a millimetre, so the uncertainty in the thickness, and in the volume and density worked out from it, is far smaller. Choosing apparatus to suit the size of the measurement is part of required practical 17.

↔ 正反两问先在心里作答…The kinetic energy and the potential energy of every particle in a system, added together

Internal energy

提示The first word means 'inside'.

为什么The particles of any substance are moving, which gives them kinetic energy, and their positions relative to one another give them potential energy. Add up both kinds for every particle and you have this quantity. Heating a system increases it.

多处填空先在心里作答…Heating a system increases the energy of its particles. This either raises the system's ____ or produces a change of ____.
轻点看答案

★ GCSE-PHYS-MAT-0007正面

Physics · Matter and particles, Year 10: density and internal energyProfessor Newton

temperature; state

提示One is what a thermometer shows; the other is what happens when ice becomes water.

为什么While a substance stays solid, liquid or gas, the energy supplied makes it hotter. At the melting or boiling point the energy instead goes into changing the arrangement of the particles, and the thermometer reading holds steady until the change is complete.

先在心里作答…Ice at 0 °C is heated until it has all become water at 0 °C. The temperature has not changed. Has the internal energy changed?
轻点看答案

★ GCSE-PHYS-MAT-0008正面

Physics · Matter and particles, Year 10: density and internal energyProfessor Newton

Yes — it has increased

提示Energy was supplied the whole time, and it cannot have vanished.

为什么The energy supplied has gone into the particles, changing how they are arranged and so increasing their potential energy. Because the temperature is the same, their kinetic energy has not changed, but the total of the two is greater. A kilogram of water at 0 °C stores more energy than a kilogram of ice at 0 °C.

轻点看答案

★ GCSE-PHYS-MAT-0009正面

Physics · Matter and particles, Year 10: density and internal energyProfessor Newton

particles

提示They are the atoms and molecules of the substance.

为什么A system's energy of this kind is not about the object as a whole moving or being lifted. It is about the motion and positions of the vast number of tiny pieces the object is made from. That is why a cup of tea at rest on a table still stores a great deal of energy.

⌨ 打字作答先在心里作答…A hot drink is left on a table and cools down to room temperature. What happens to the internal energy of the drink? (one word: increases, decreases or unchanged)

★ GCSE-PHYS-MAT-0010正面

Physics · Matter and particles, Year 10: density and internal energyProfessor Newton

Decreases

提示Energy is leaving the drink for the room.

为什么As the drink cools, energy is transferred from it to the surroundings. Its particles move more slowly on average, so their total kinetic energy, and with it the total energy stored by the particles, goes down. The room gains what the drink loses.
