A defended claim

提示Judges want to know what you think and why, not only what you found out.

为什么An argument answers the question in one sentence, then gives three or four reasons and the evidence behind each. Everything else is background. The test is simple: could a listener disagree with your first sentence? If not, it is a description and you have not yet started.

提示Three headings a history teacher hands out for sorting causes: money, power and people.

为什么The headings stop you listing at random and show up the gaps — a talk that names five causes from one heading and none from the others has not really looked. But sorting is only step one. The argument is which group mattered most, and why the others did not tip the balance.

Its historical significance

提示Fame is not the test — a famous person can change very little, and a forgotten one a great deal.

为什么Christine Counsell's five R's are a handy check: was it Remarkable, Remembered, Resonant, Resulting in change, and Revealing of its time? A talk that claims something mattered has to say who it mattered to, and for how long. It is always argued, never simply announced.

Anachronism

提示Something from the wrong century has wandered into the picture — here it is an idea rather than an object.

为什么The word means "against time". A wristwatch in a Roman film is the obvious version; the subtler one smuggles in a modern idea — nationalism, childhood, the vote — and finds the past guilty of not having thought of it. Explaining why people acted means recovering what they believed at the time.

提示He sealed it in a meadow beside the Thames, in the summer of the year before he died.

为什么The Pope annulled it within ten weeks, and it was reissued several times afterwards; only three of its clauses remain law today. It is a useful example precisely because its meaning was built up long after the event — later generations read rights into it that the barons never intended.

rebuttal

提示You raise the other side’s best shot on purpose, and then knock it down.

为什么It is the move that makes a judgement look earned. Name the best version of the opposing case — not a weak cartoon of it — say what evidence supports it, then explain why yours outweighs it. Judges ask at least one question at the end of every talk, and this is usually where it lands.

long-term

提示The kind that outlive everyone who was there at the time.

为什么Consequences fan out over time. The Great Fire of London burned for four days; the rebuilding in brick, and the fire insurance business it created, lasted centuries.

interpretations

提示Not sources — these are made afterwards, by people arguing about what the sources mean.

为什么Historians differ because they ask different questions, work in different decades and value different evidence. A talk grows a spine the moment it names a view it disagrees with and says why: "many accounts say X; the parish records suggest otherwise, because…".

What stayed the same

提示Big events are noisy; a great deal of ordinary life carries on underneath them, unaltered.

为什么Change and continuity are one question, not two topics. After 1066 the ruling class was replaced almost entirely, yet most villagers went on farming the same strips in the same way. A judgement that measures both is far harder to knock down.

A historical period

提示"The Tudors" and "the Middle Ages" are two; nobody living then used either label.

为什么These are tools, not facts. "The Middle Ages" was named by people who saw it as a gap between Rome and their own rebirth of learning — a verdict smuggled into a name. Useful, but they hide as much as they show, so a talk that pins its story to one should say why that framing fits.

Whose voices are missing

提示Ask who could write, who kept their papers safe, and which people nobody bothered to record.

为什么Most surviving documents were made by the literate, the propertied and the official. That is why local sources matter so much: parish registers, workhouse books, census returns, gravestones and oral history reach people the state papers never name.

Five minutes

提示Long enough for a claim and three reasons; nowhere near enough for the whole story.

为什么The Great Debate is a public-speaking competition run by the Historical Association for students in Years 10 to 13. Each speaker answers a set question, with no slides and no props of any kind, and the judges ask at least one question afterwards. Regional heats run in the autumn, online semi-finals follow, and the grand final is held in March. The question changes every year, so what you prepare is the thinking, not the topic.
