• Typical reaction times are between about 0.2 and 0.9 seconds.
• Reaction time can be measured by timing how far a dropped ruler falls before it is caught.
• Tiredness, alcohol, some drugs and distractions such as phones make reaction times longer, which increases thinking distance.
• Wet or icy roads, worn tyres and worn brakes reduce friction and increase braking distance.
