Romeo and Juliet: love in its different forms

你需要知道的

• Romeo's love for Rosaline is Petrarchan: a private, self-absorbed infatuation with an unattainable woman.
• Bird imagery develops from Benvolio's swan and crow to Romeo's 'snowy dove', suggesting purity and peace.
• At the feast the lovers share a sonnet full of religious imagery, which shows Juliet is an equal partner.
• Juliet's 'tassel-gentle' and 'mansion of a love' images show love as both freedom and possession.
• The lovers' deaths reconcile the families, so love overcomes hate only through sacrifice.
