• Metre is the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry.
• An iamb is unstressed-stressed; five iambs make iambic pentameter, as in Shakespeare's Sonnet 18.
• A trochee is stressed-unstressed, an anapest is two unstressed then a stress, and a dactyl is a stress then two unstressed.
• Reading a line aloud in its natural stresses helps you hear the metre.
• Places where a poem breaks its usual metre are good moments to ask why and build an interpretation.
