Left alone, a learner tends to ask one flat question about a geographical issue: "why did this happen?" Take a case study a KS3 class might cover — a settlement at risk of flooding. A single flat question ("why does this area flood?") gets you the physical cause and nothing else. Run it through SEEP instead:

The Ask Ladder runs from Locating up to Reflective/Transfer, and SEEP questions mostly cluster at the Diagnostic and Generative levels — SEEP isn't really designed for "what does this word mean" (Locating), it's designed for "what's actually driving this, and what would change if one factor shifted." That's worth knowing because it tells you when to reach for SEEP: after the basic facts of a case study are already in place, not as the very first thing you ask about a new topic.
- Locating (before SEEP): "What is a flood-risk area? What does 'permeable' mean?"

Geography's Answer Trap is settling on a single cause for a complex issue and stopping — "it flooded because of heavy rain" — when a real geographical issue almost always has something to say across all four SEEP angles.
