The Ask Ladder is aitutors.me's model of question quality: five escalating levels a learner can climb on any topic, from simply locating a definition up to transferring the underlying idea somewhere new. It matters because "ask better questions" is useless advice on its own — nobody knows what "better" means in the moment. The ladder gives it five concrete rungs.

The five levels

  1. Locating — "What does this word/term/symbol mean?" Fact-finding. The lowest rung, and the easiest for a search engine or AI to answer instantly.
  2. Clarifying — "Why does this step work?" / "What's the rule here?" Understanding a mechanism, not just naming it.
  3. Diagnostic — "Where exactly did my reasoning go wrong?" Self-directed at an actual error, which requires having attempted something first.
  4. Generative — "What would happen if I changed X?" Extending the idea, hypothesising beyond what was shown.
  5. Reflective/Transfer — "Where else does this idea apply?" The highest rung: connecting the idea to other knowledge entirely.

A learner stuck at level 1 never builds real understanding, however many facts they accumulate. The ladder isn't a ranking of good vs bad students — it's a tool for noticing which level you're actually operating at right now, on this specific topic.

One topic, all five levels — simplifying fractions

Abstract descriptions of question types don't stick. Here's the same KS3 maths topic — simplifying fractions — interrogated at every rung, so the progression is concrete rather than a list of definitions.

Notice what happens across the ladder: the Locating question could be answered by a dictionary. The Clarifying question needs an actual explanation of the mechanism. The Diagnostic question requires the learner to have already tried the problem and produced a specific, checkable error — you cannot ask it without first attempting something, which is why the First-Guess Rule matters so much for reaching this level at all. The Generative and Reflective questions are the ones that actually build transferable understanding, and they're also the ones a learner is least likely to think to ask unprompted.

Why most students get stuck at levels 1–2

This isn't a character flaw — it's a straightforward incentive problem. Locating and Clarifying questions are fast to ask and fast to get answered, especially by a search engine or a chatbot: type the term, get the definition, done. There's no natural friction pushing a learner up to level 3 unless something specific happens — an error gets caught, or someone explicitly asks "why," or a curious "what if" gets voiced instead of suppressed.

Practical tips for noticing your level

  • Ask yourself what your question would let you do next. A Locating answer lets you name something. A Diagnostic answer lets you fix something. A Generative answer lets you predict something you haven't seen yet. If the honest answer is "nothing, I'll just know a word," you're on the bottom rung — which is fine as a start, but not a finish.
  • Notice if your question could be answered without you having tried anything. Diagnostic and above all require some prior attempt — a guess, a worked step, an error. If you haven't tried anything yet, you're probably not past level 2, and that's worth fixing with the First-Guess Rule before you ask at all.
  • After getting an answer, ask one more question one rung up. Got a definition? Ask why it's true. Got an explanation? Ask where you went wrong on a specific attempt. This single habit — one more question, one rung higher — is most of what climbing the ladder actually looks like in practice, and it's the same instinct behind the Ask-Try-Ask cycle.
