The Junior Maths Challenge is exactly the kind of competition that cramming suits badly and spaced repetition suits well — because so much of doing well on it comes down to facts and shortcuts being instantly available, not freshly worked out under time pressure. Why cramming is the wrong shape for JMC prep
A 60-minute, 25-question paper with no calculator gives a child under two and a half minutes per question on average. That's not enough time to derive a divisibility test from first principles, work out from scratch which digits a square number can end in, or re-establish the exterior-angle rule for a polygon. Those things need to already be automatic — recognised the instant they're relevant, not reasoned through in the moment.
Cramming the week before a sitting can put facts into short-term memory, but short-term memory is precisely the wrong kind of memory for a competition that rewards instant recall under pressure. A fact that took five seconds of hesitation to recall in a practice session on Tuesday will take at least as long, and probably longer, in the exam hall under real time pressure. What the JMC actually rewards is a fact that surfaces without any hesitation at all — and that only comes from a fact being reviewed repeatedly over time, at increasing intervals, which is the entire mechanism spaced repetition is built around.
This is also why the common mistakes we've catalogued so often look like a rule applied in the wrong situation rather than a rule never learned at all — that's exactly the failure mode of a half-crammed fact. It was recognisable enough to reach for, but not solid enough to apply correctly under pressure.
How spaced repetition actually fits JMC prep
Spaced repetition works by showing a fact, letting the learner grade how well they recalled it, and using that grade to decide the next gap before it's shown again — a fact recalled easily gets a longer gap; one that was shaky gets a shorter one. Over weeks and months, the facts a child genuinely knows drift out to long intervals (freeing up review time), while the ones that are still shaky keep coming back until they're solid too.
For JMC prep specifically, that maps almost perfectly onto the two dozen or so facts and shortcuts that recur most often across the actual paper — divisibility tests, the exterior angle rule, which digits a square number can and can't end in, the difference between LCM-as-product and LCM-as-genuinely-smaller. These are individually small, atomic facts (the right shape for a flashcard — see why a card should hold exactly one fact), and there are enough of them that trying to hold them all in mind at once without a system is genuinely difficult. - The JMC toolkit deck is the place to start. It's not about any one year's questions — it covers the general strategies that apply across every JMC sitting: working backwards from multiple-choice options, drawing a diagram before reasoning about a shape, trying small cases first, and the simple fact that a wrong answer on the JMC costs nothing, so every question is worth an educated guess.

A sensible routine looks like: start the toolkit deck a few months out, add one year-deck every couple of weeks, and let the spaced-repetition schedule do the actual timing — a handful of cards most days rather than one long session. Because the system caps daily reviews and finishes cards that are genuinely learned (rather than showing them forever), it stays manageable even as more decks are added.
What an actual review session looks like
In practice this doesn't need to be a separate "JMC study session" bolted onto an already busy week. A child opens their flashcard queue the way they would for any other subject, and the JMC cards due that day sit alongside their ordinary KS3 revision — a handful of minutes, not a scheduled block. Each card shows a question, the child grades their own recall against the three buttons the platform uses everywhere else, and the schedule adjusts from there: a card recalled easily drifts out to a much longer gap, while one that was shaky comes back sooner. Over a few months, the toolkit deck and two or three year-decks settle into a background rhythm rather than a task anyone has to remember to do — which is precisely the point, since the facts that matter on results day are the ones that no longer feel like they're being revised at all.
What flashcards don't replace
None of this replaces sitting an actual past paper. Flashcards handle the recall layer — the facts that should be instant — but the JMC also genuinely rewards the puzzle-solving instinct that only comes from sitting with a full 25-question paper and working through it, ideally untimed and for fun, the way our main JMC guide recommends. Think of the two as complementary: flashcards make the facts automatic so there's more headspace left for the actual puzzle-solving when it matters, on the day.

Isn't the JMC about problem-solving, not memorising facts?
Both — but the problem-solving only works fast if the underlying facts (divisibility tests, angle rules, squares and cubes) don't need re-deriving every time. Spaced repetition handles the fact layer, which frees up thinking time in the actual paper for the genuine problem-solving.
How long before the JMC should we start using flashcards?
Spaced repetition needs the schedule to actually run — a card seen once and never again hasn't been learned. A few months of light, regular review (a handful of cards most days) beats a single intensive week, however that week is spent.
Can flashcards alone prepare a child for the JMC?
No, and they're not meant to. Flashcards are for the recall layer — the facts and shortcuts that should be instant. Actually sitting a past paper, ideally untimed and for fun, is still the best way to practise the problem-solving itself.
