Project-based learning (PBL) means a child spends an extended period — typically two to six weeks — producing something real in response to an open question or problem, rather than studying a topic and then completing exercises about it. The product might be a working model, a written report, a design proposal, or a presentation, but the shape of the learning is the same: start with a question, build knowledge because you need it to answer the question, end with something you can show someone.

If your child has come home talking about "our project on flood defences" or "the exhibition we're building for the local museum," this is very likely what's happening, whether or not the school uses the term.

The five features that make something a project

Not everything schools call a "project" actually has PBL's structure. A worksheet pack with a fancier cover page is still a worksheet pack. Look for these five things together — PBL usually has most or all of them:

  1. Real-world framing. The task is dressed as a genuine problem, not a curriculum objective in disguise. "Design a drainage fix for a playground that floods" beats "complete this worksheet on surface area and volume," even though the underlying maths might be identical.
  2. Student ownership. The child makes real decisions about direction — which angle to take, what to include, how to present it — not just which answer to write in a box.
  3. Cross-disciplinary skills. A good project rarely respects subject boundaries cleanly. The playground drainage project needs maths (volume calculations), geography (surface run-off), and some DT (materials, feasibility).
  4. A tangible output. Something exists at the end that didn't exist before — a poster, a model, a proposal document, a short film — and it can be shown to someone outside the classroom.
  5. Process is assessed, not just the final answer. Marks (formal or informal) go to planning, iteration, collaboration and reflection, not solely to whether the final report is correct.

What a project is NOT

  • A long worksheet. Ten pages of questions on the same topic is still direct instruction with more paper.
  • A "research project" that's really just copying facts into a document. If there's no decision-making, no design choice, no genuine unknown to work out, it's a comprehension task wearing a project's name.
  • Group work with no individual accountability. Putting four children at a table and calling it a project skips the "ownership" feature entirely unless each child has a real, visible piece of the outcome.

A worked mini-example

Take a familiar KS3 scenario: the school playground floods every time it rains hard.

  • The question: how much water falls on the playground in a storm, and could a redesigned drainage channel cope with it?
  • What the child does: measures or estimates the playground's area, researches typical UK rainfall intensity, calculates volume of run-off, sketches a channel design, and checks whether it's actually feasible to build.
  • Subjects touched: maths (area, volume, rates), geography (rainfall data, drainage), DT (materials and feasibility).
  • The output: a one-page proposal with a diagram and the underlying calculations, presented to a parent or teacher.

Where PBL fits alongside normal KS3 lessons

This is the part parents most often get wrong, usually because American writing on PBL describes whole schools built around it. In a typical UK state secondary, that's rare. PBL shows up as:

  • A DT coursework unit (Non-Examined Assessment)
  • A science "enquiry" topic culminating in a practical write-up
  • A humanities case-study project (a local history exhibit, a geography fieldwork report)
  • Extracurricular routes like CREST Awards or science fairs

It is a supplement — a way to apply and consolidate content that's still primarily taught through direct instruction. How to tell if what your child is doing counts

Ask your child three questions:

  1. "What decision did you get to make yourself?" — if the answer is none, ownership is missing.
  2. "What are you going to show at the end?" — if there's no answer, there's no tangible output yet.
  3. "Why does this matter outside school?" — if they can't say, the real-world framing probably wasn't there to begin with.

If a school activity is missing two or more of the five features, it's worth asking the teacher how it's meant to work — not because it's wrong, but because you'll understand what your child is actually being asked to do.
