The 10 project ideas
1. Local land-use survey and map
Hook: what is your local area actually used for, block by block?
What they do: walk a defined local area, record land use (residential, retail, green space, industrial) on a hand-drawn or digital map, then analyse the pattern and propose what one change would most improve the area.
Geography skills: land-use classification, mapping, spatial pattern analysis.
Scope: 2 weeks, one afternoon a week.
2. Microclimate comparison across the school site
Hook: is the school car park actually warmer than the field, and by how much?
What they do: measure temperature, wind, and humidity at five or six points around the school site at the same time of day, predict which will be warmest and windiest before measuring, then map the results and explain the pattern.

3. River-study fieldwork write-up
Hook: how does a river actually change from its source to a point downstream?
What they do: collect real measurements at a river (width, depth, velocity, sediment) if a field trip is available, or use published Environment Agency data if not, then write up how the river's characteristics change and why.
Geography skills: fieldwork technique, hydrology, using and citing data.
Scope: 2-3 weeks, one afternoon a week.
4. Local flood-risk investigation
Hook: which parts of your local area would flood first, and why?
What they do: research local topography and drainage using Environment Agency flood maps, identify a specific at-risk area, and produce a report explaining the physical and human factors that make it vulnerable.

5. Carbon-footprint audit of family weekly travel
Hook: what is the actual carbon cost of a normal week of getting around?
What they do: log every journey the family makes in a week (mode, distance, purpose), calculate an estimated carbon footprint using a standard emissions-per-km table, then propose one realistic change that would cut it most.
Geography skills: data collection, calculation, environmental reasoning.
Scope: 1-2 weeks, one week to log plus one afternoon to calculate and write up.
6. Mapping access to green space locally
Hook: does everyone in your area live within a 10-minute walk of a park?
What they do: map local green spaces and walking distances from several sample streets, identify any gaps in access, then link the finding to social factors (income, housing density) in the areas with least access.

7. SEEP analysis of a proposed local development
Hook: who wins and who loses from that new housing estate or retail park being built nearby?
What they do: research a real, current, or recently completed local development, then produce a structured SEEP analysis considering the social, economic, environmental, and political implications, weighing which group's interests are best served.

8. Comparing two contrasting places on one theme
Hook: how does the same issue — flood risk, migration, or economic change — look completely different in two places?
What they do: choose a UK town or city and a contrasting place studied in class (a different country or region), research the same single theme in both, then present a structured comparison explaining the differences and why they exist.
Geography skills: comparative analysis, place knowledge, transferring a framework across contexts.

9. Litter or pollution survey with a proposed solution
Hook: where is litter or pollution actually worst locally, and what would realistically fix it?
What they do: survey a defined area for litter or pollution hotspots over several visits, map and quantify the findings, then propose a specific, costed intervention rather than a vague "we should recycle more."
