Most abandoned school and home projects don't fail because the child gave up — they fail at the topic stage, weeks before any actual work began, because the topic was too broad, too abstract, or chosen to sound impressive rather than to answer a question the child was genuinely curious about. If you've watched a project stall — enthusiastic for two days, then quietly forgotten — the fix is very rarely "try harder." It's choosing a different, smaller, sharper topic next time.

Why topics die: the two failure modes
In practice almost every stalled project falls into one of two patterns.
Too broad. "I want to do my project on climate change" or "I'll do something about space" sounds like a topic but isn't one — it's a subject. A subject has no natural finish line, so the student either does nothing (because they don't know where to start) or does a shallow tour of everything (because there's no reason to stop at any particular point).
Chosen to impress, not to interest. Children — like adults — sometimes pick the topic that sounds most sophisticated to a parent or teacher rather than the one they'd actually enjoy spending three weeks on. The three-part filter
A topic is ready to start when it passes all three of these:
- Real interest — your child can explain, unprompted, why this particular thing rather than a different one in the same area. "Because I want to know if X" is a good sign. "Because it sounded good" is not.
- A real question — not a topic area, but a specific question with a findable answer. "Which of two local rivers is more polluted?" is a question. "Pollution" is not.
- A realistic output — something they can name now that they will have made or found out by the deadline, given the actual time available (an afternoon a week for three weeks looks very different from a single weekend).
If an idea fails test two or three, it's usually salvageable — you just need to shrink it. If it fails test one, look for a different idea; no amount of right-sizing fixes a topic nobody's curious about.

"I want to do something about the environment." → "Does our school's food waste bin fill up faster on days with meat on the menu?" "I want to do a maths project." → "How much would our family trip to [a real destination] cost with three different travel options, and which is actually cheapest once everything is added up?" "Build an app" is a six-month professional undertaking; "design and test three screens" is a two-week school project with a genuine deliverable.
Notice the pattern in all four: the fix is almost always adding a constraint — a place, a comparison, a specific person or object, a time window — not removing ambition. The right-sized version is usually more interesting than the vague one, not less, because it has a real answer waiting at the end rather than an open-ended "everything about."
A question to ask before the topic is locked in
Ask your child to finish this sentence: "By the end, I will have ___." If they can fill the blank with something concrete — a graph, a model, a leaflet, a short film, a working design — the topic is ready. If the best they can do is "learned a lot about it," send them back to the filter. This single sentence catches most too-broad topics in under a minute, and it costs nothing to ask.
