A child who has read a page four times genuinely feels they know it. They are not being lazy or dishonest — the feeling of knowing arrives well before the knowledge, and telling them apart is a skill that develops late.

The illusion is about fluency
The mechanism is well studied. When judging whether we know something, we do not have direct access to memory strength — so we use proxies, and the main one is how easily the material comes to mind.
That proxy is systematically misleading after studying, because everything is easy immediately afterwards. Recently-read text is fluent to process, and fluency gets read as mastery. This is why re-reading is such a persistent study habit despite being one of the weakest: it reliably produces the feeling that it is working.
Karpicke and Blunt's 2011 Science study is the sharpest illustration. Students who practised retrieval outperformed students who built concept maps — and predicted the opposite. They were wrong about which method had served them, in the direction that felt better.
Why children are worse at it than adults
Two reasons compound.
Metacognition develops. The ability to monitor your own understanding and act on the monitoring is not fixed at birth; it improves through adolescence. A twelve-year-old is not a small adult with the same self-monitoring apparatus.
They have less experience to calibrate against. An adult who has been caught out by the illusion of knowing a few times learns to distrust the feeling. A Year 8 student has had fewer of those collisions, and most of them arrived as a disappointing mark rather than as a lesson about self-assessment.
Which means "just ask your child if they know it" is not a workable strategy, and neither is "they should be able to judge for themselves". Both put weight on a capacity that is still under construction.
The one reliable self-test
There is a good answer, and it is simple: try to produce it from memory, without looking.
Retrieval is the only self-assessment that cannot be faked by fluency. If your child can state the rule with the page closed, they know it. If they can only recognise it, they do not — and the gap between those two is exactly where revision goes wrong.
This is the deepest reason flashcards work for children specifically. A card is a forced, honest self-test. It removes the judgement call by making the answer either come or not come.
Which leads to a design problem
If children misjudge their own learning, how should a system decide when a card is finished?
Two bad answers:
Let the child decide unprompted. They will either retire cards they have not learned (fluency illusion) or retire nothing at all, because auditing a hundred cards is not something a twelve-year-old is going to do on a Tuesday.
Retire cards automatically. Take the decision away and the achievement evaporates. A card that silently vanishes teaches nothing; worse, the child may not agree, and the system has overruled them about their own mind.
Our answer splits the two halves. The system does the noticing; the child makes the decision.
When a card's history says it is genuinely locked in — a long interval, several consecutive successes, no recent failures — the child is offered the ending, in plain language: You've had this right every time for three months. Lock it in? They can say yes, or say "keep practising", which is a real answer rather than a dismissal.
The noticing is the part that needs data and patience, and software is good at it. The deciding is the part that needs to belong to the learner, because that is where the sense of achievement lives.
Why the threshold is conservative
The offer only appears when a card has cleared a demanding bar — roughly three months of interval and several clean reviews in a row. That is deliberately cautious, and the asymmetry matters: telling a child they have mastered something they have not is worse than noticing late.
An over-eager congratulation is not a small error. It reinforces exactly the illusion this whole area of research warns about, using the authority of the system to confirm a feeling that happens to be wrong.
What parents can do with this
Ask them to tell you, not show you. "Explain it to me with the book shut" is a better probe than "have you revised?" — and it is a retrieval practice session in disguise.
Treat "I know it" as a hypothesis. Not a claim to challenge, just one worth testing. The testing is friendly: a couple of questions, closed book.
Do not treat a struggle as evidence of not revising. Effortful recall is the productive state. A child who finds their cards hard is often doing exactly the right thing.
Trust the schedule over the feeling. If the system is bringing a card back, it is because the card's history says it needs to come back. That is a better estimate than anyone's sense of how well the last session went — including yours.
