Walk into any house on a revision evening and you will find a child reading notes with a highlighter. Those are the two techniques a landmark review of the evidence rated lowest — and the reason they persist is that they feel better than the ones that work.

Why they feel so convincing

Rereading exploits fluency. The second pass through a page is dramatically easier than the first, and that ease is indistinguishable, from the inside, from knowing the material. The feeling of "yes, I've got this" is real; it just does not predict whether the information will be available on Thursday.

Highlighting adds something worse: evidence. At the end of an hour there is a visibly worked-on page. It looks like output. But the act of deciding what to highlight is a shallow judgement made while reading, not a retrieval, and the review found little benefit from it. There is even a plausible cost — attention goes to marking rather than to meaning.

The combination is the worst case, and it is the most common one: an hour spent producing a beautiful page that has not been recalled once.

What flashcards do differently

One thing, and it is sufficient: they make your child produce the answer.

That is the entire difference. Reading gives you the material; a card asks whether you have it. The moment of trying — including the failed attempts — is what the research on the testing effect identifies as the learning event.

It also happens to be an honest self-assessment, which rereading is not. Your child cannot tell whether they know something by reading it. They can tell instantly by trying to say it with the page closed.

Where rereading is genuinely the right tool

Being fair, because "rereading is bad" is too crude.

Rereading is appropriate when the goal is understanding rather than retention — when your child did not follow the explanation and needs to work through it again, slowly. That is a legitimate and necessary activity, and no amount of retrieval practice substitutes for it. You cannot recall what you never understood.

The mistake is using it for the second job. Once the idea has landed, rereading it four more times adds very little; recalling it four times over four weeks adds a lot.

A useful sequence: understand it (read, ask, be taught), then retrieve it (cards, spaced). Most children do the first step once and then repeat it instead of moving to the second.

What to say to your child

Two phrasings that work better than "you should use flashcards".

"Tell me, don't show me." Ask them to explain the thing with the book shut. This is retrieval practice disguised as a conversation, and it also gives them direct experience of the gap between recognising and knowing — which is the lesson that actually changes behaviour.

"If it feels easy, it isn't working yet." Counterintuitive and worth installing early. Children assume difficulty means they are bad at it. Reframing effort as the mechanism rather than the symptom is one of the most useful things you can teach them about studying.

What we do about it in the product

Fairly bluntly: there is no highlighter, and notes are not the interface.

The daily loop is retrieval, spaced, with the answer hidden until your child commits. When a card goes wrong, the answer appears — feedback immediately after an attempt, which is the arrangement the evidence supports — and the card comes back sooner.

We also do not show a score. The moment a review becomes a performance measured by an adult, a child starts optimising the feeling of it rather than the substance, which is how you get back to highlighting.

The uncomfortable summary

Effective revision feels worse than ineffective revision. That is not a paradox to be explained away; it is a straightforward consequence of how memory works. Effort at retrieval is what produces durable learning, and effort feels like effort.

Any study product promising to make revision effortless is promising to remove the ingredient.
