A GCSE student in England typically studies around 8 to 10 subjects, a genuinely broad spread for that age. Two years later, at A-level, that same student typically narrows to just 3 subjects — one of the sharpest specialisations at 16-to-18 anywhere in the world. GCSE: broad by design
Most students in England take a set of compulsory GCSEs — English Language, English Literature, Maths, and (for most) a combined or separate set of sciences — alongside a handful of options chosen from humanities, languages, arts and technical subjects. In practice this typically produces somewhere in the range of 8 to 10 GCSE subjects per student, though the exact number varies by school and pathway (some schools' EBacc-focused curricula push towards the higher end, others allow more flexibility). This is a wide subject count for a 16-year-old by international standards — broader than many countries expect at the equivalent age.
A-level: narrow by design
Two years later, the same student typically studies just 3 A-level subjects (occasionally 4, particularly in the first year, or where a student is taking an AS alongside). This isn't an accident of scheduling — A-levels were deliberately designed as specialist, in-depth qualifications, on the assumption that broad general education has already been covered at GCSE, and that university admissions in England (coordinated through UCAS) reward depth in a small number of relevant subjects over continued breadth. A student applying to study Physics at university, for instance, is expected to have gone deep into Maths, Further Maths and Physics at A-level, not to have kept up a broader general spread.
The unusual part: England does both things at once

France — narrower than before, but still broader than A-level
The French baccalauréat général, reformed in 2019, moved away from a small number of fixed broad streams towards a system where students choose specialities alongside a common core (which still includes French, philosophy, a modern language, and other shared subjects). As the Ministry of Education's own description sets out, students combine specialist choices with a retained common core — a narrower system than before the reform, but still broader in the number of subjects studied than the English A-level's typical three.
The United States — breadth maintained to graduation
US high school graduation requirements, which vary by state but follow a broadly similar pattern, generally require students to keep studying core subject areas — English, mathematics, science, social studies, and often a foreign language and physical education — all the way through senior year (roughly age 17-18), rather than narrowing to two or three subjects. There is no A-level-style handover from a broad qualification to a narrow one; breadth is simply maintained.
Germany — a middle position between A-level and the IB
The German Abitur narrows less sharply than A-level, and less uniformly than the IB. Students in the gymnasiale Oberstufe (the upper secondary stage leading to the Abitur) choose a small number of subjects to study at an advanced level — Leistungskurse — while continuing a wider spread of subjects at a standard level, Grundkurse, covering areas including a foreign language, science, and social studies through to the final exam. The exact number of subjects examined varies somewhat by German state (education is run at state, or Land, level), but the structure consistently keeps students studying more subjects to 18 or 19 than an A-level student does, while still allowing some genuine depth in the Leistungskurse choices — a genuine middle ground between England's narrow three and the IB's uniform six.
Why not just add a fourth or fifth A-level?
If the mismatch between GCSE's breadth and A-level's narrowness is this stark, an obvious question is why England doesn't simply require a broader post-16 qualification — a fourth or fifth A-level, say, or a compulsory general-studies component. Some students already do take a fourth subject, particularly in the first year of sixth form, and qualifications like the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) exist precisely to add an extra, independently researched element without abandoning A-level's core structure. But a wholesale move to broader post-16 study has never been adopted nationally, largely because it would ripple all the way through university admissions: English degrees are built around three years of deep, single-subject study on the assumption that A-level has already gone deep in that subject, and a broader post-16 qualification would either need shorter, less specialised university courses to match it (as happens in the US and, differently, in Germany and Scotland) or would simply add extra breadth on top of an unchanged degree structure. Reforms have been proposed and debated over the decades — a more IB-like "British Baccalaureate" has been floated more than once — but the structural interdependence between A-level depth and single-subject degree structure has so far kept England's narrow post-16 model in place.

Why this matters practically
The comparison isn't about which system is "better" — each is designed around different goals. A-level's narrowness works well for a student who already knows they want to specialise, feeding directly into university courses that expect deep subject knowledge from day one. It works less comfortably for a student who is still genuinely unsure at 16 what they want to study, since dropping from 8-10 subjects to 3 is a much bigger commitment than gradually reducing options over several years, as the IB, French and American systems each do in their own way.
