The Intermediate Maths Challenge doesn't reward working things out slowly and correctly — it rewards recognising the right move instantly, 25 times, in an hour. That's a different skill from the one most KS3 classroom maths practises, and it responds particularly well to a particular kind of revision: short, spaced, low-effort recall practice, spread out over weeks rather than crammed into days. Here's why that fits the IMC specifically, and how to actually set it up.

Why the IMC suits spaced practice better than most exams

Most school assessments reward depth on a small number of topics, worked through carefully. The IMC is the opposite shape: 25 short, independent questions, each solvable in well under two minutes if the right fact is already at hand — and painfully slow if it has to be derived from scratch under pressure.

That makes the IMC an unusually good match for spaced repetition, a revision method built specifically to get individual facts into fast, reliable recall rather than deep, slow understanding of a single topic. It also suits the IMC's marking. Because a wrong answer to one of questions 16-25 costs marks — 1 for 16-20, 2 for 21-25 — while a blank answer never does, exam strategy itself is part of what needs to stick, not just content. "Only guess once you've ruled something out, and guess freely on questions 1-15" is exactly the kind of rule that fades from memory if it's only mentioned once, the week before the paper — and is worth its own place in a spaced deck rather than a single conversation.

What spaced repetition actually changes

The mechanism is simple, and it's worth understanding because it's the opposite of how most families naturally revise. Instead of reviewing everything on a fixed schedule (every night, say, or the weekend before), each fact gets reviewed on its own schedule, based on how well your child remembers it:

  • A fact recalled easily gets pushed further away — reviewed again in a week, then a month, then longer.
  • A fact that's shaky comes back sooner — tomorrow, or the next session — until it's secure.

The effect over weeks is that review time concentrates on what's actually still wobbly, not on facts your child already has cold. Using the actual IMC decks

There's no need to build an IMC revision set from scratch. Our maths tutor, Professor Pi, maintains a ready-made deck for every Intermediate Maths Challenge sitting, built from thirteen years of the paper's recurring ideas:

  • The IMC toolkit deck — the general-purpose facts and habits (angle chasing, area by subtraction, the 5-12-13 triple, and more) that don't belong to any single year, and are the best place to start.
  • The IMC 2019 deck, the IMC 2023 deck, and one for every other sitting back to 2015 — each drawn from that specific year's flavour of question, so a child can work chronologically or jump to whichever year feels most useful.

A sensible starting order is the toolkit deck first, since it covers the ideas that recur across nearly every year (see our count of what actually keeps coming up for exactly which ones), then one or two individual year decks closer to the actual sitting, worked through a handful of cards at a time rather than all at once.

Each card in these decks is deliberately built the same way: one fact, tested one way, with a hint that narrows the search rather than giving the answer away, and extra context that only appears once the answer's been given. That shape matters more than it sounds like it should. A card that asks two things at once — "explain the rule for similar shapes and give an example" — can't be graded honestly, because your child might remember one half and not the other, and there's no button for that. A realistic weekly rhythm

There's no need for a formal study plan. A workable pattern most families land on:

  • A few short sessions a week, not one long one. Five to ten minutes, three or four times a week, beats a single 45-minute Sunday session — spacing is the whole point, and a single weekly block doesn't give the schedule room to work.
  • Let the schedule do the deciding. Resist the urge to re-drill everything before the exam "just to be safe" — a fact your child has consistently got right will already come back at the right moment on its own.
  • Add one real timed paper closer to the date. The individual facts matter most day to day, but a full 60-minute run-through, once or twice in the run-up, builds familiarity with the format itself — the multiple-choice style, and the feel of the clock.
  • Keep it proportionate. A single January competition should sit inside an otherwise calm week, the same advice that applies to the IMC generally — a maths competition is meant to be a fun stretch, not another source of pressure.

FAQ

How long before the IMC should we start preparing?

Earlier and lighter beats later and heavier. A handful of minutes a few times a week for two or three months embeds the recurring facts far more securely than an intense week beforehand — and it's far less likely to turn a fun competition into a stressful one.

Does my child need to sit down and do full past papers?

Occasionally, yes — a timed practice paper builds familiarity with the 60-minute format and the multiple-choice style. But most of the value on a day-to-day basis comes from short, spaced practice on the individual facts, not from repeatedly sitting full papers.

What if my child forgets a fact they'd already got right before?

That's exactly what spaced repetition is designed to catch. A card that's forgotten comes back sooner; a card that's consistently remembered drifts out to longer gaps. The schedule adjusts to what your child actually knows, rather than assuming everything needs equal practice.
