What you need to know
- The Romans conquered Britain by force from AD 43, crushing resistance such as Boudicca's revolt.
- They brought big changes: forts, roads, Hadrian's Wall, new towns like London and York, Latin, new foods and villas for the rich.
- For most ordinary people life changed little; they stayed farmers who still worked the land for others.
- After the Roman army left in 410, many Roman features such as towns and roads fell into ruin, though farming carried on.
