What you need to know

  • In the short term, the Black Death caused soaring food prices, abandoned crops and deep grief among survivors.
  • Once the deaths stopped, a shortage of workers pushed wages up and let peasants demand better conditions.
  • Rulers tried to freeze wages with the Statute of Labourers in 1351, which helped cause anger that fed into the Peasants' Revolt of 1381.
  • In the longer term, the plague weakened serfdom and led to new public health measures such as quarantine.
  • Some historians link the Black Death to the start of the Italian Renaissance, a consequence that appeared decades later.
