What you need to know

  • A naval race followed Britain's launch of HMS Dreadnought in 1906, and Germany built its own dreadnoughts in response.
  • Austria-Hungary feared Serbian nationalism in the Balkans after Serbia grew in the two Balkan Wars.
  • The assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 was the trigger.
  • Because of the alliances, Austria-Hungary's war on Serbia drew in Russia, Germany, France and then Britain within days.
