Puberty & adolescence

Puberty & adolescenceFree7:05Heddy Score 3 of 7, below the standard

What you need to know

  • At puberty, oestrogen and testosterone cause the changes that make the body able to reproduce.
  • The menstrual cycle includes shedding of the uterus lining, rebuilding of that lining, release of an egg, and keeping the lining ready.
  • FSH and LH from the pituitary make an egg mature and be released. Oestrogen and progesterone from the ovaries control the lining.
  • As oestrogen and progesterone rise they inhibit FSH and LH, an example of negative feedback, until the cycle restarts if there is no pregnancy.
