Self-studying an A-level resit works best when you plan from the specification rather than a textbook, build your schedule around past papers rather than topic order, and arrange marked feedback deliberately, because none of that happens automatically once you're outside a classroom. This isn't a motivational push to "just put the hours in" — a resit year without a school around you removes several things you probably relied on the first time without realising it, and the plan below is built to replace them, not to pretend they don't matter.
Start from the specification, not a textbook
Every exam board publishes a specification for each A-level: the exact document listing everything you can be examined on, at the depth it can be examined to. This is worth treating as your primary planning tool, ahead of any textbook.
The reason is simple. A textbook's chapter order reflects one author's or publisher's judgement about how best to teach the subject — which is a reasonable judgement, but it isn't the exam board's. The specification, by contrast, is the actual contract between you and the exam: work through it topic by topic, and you can be confident nothing examinable has been skipped. Endorsed textbooks are optional — boards endorse certain books, but the specification is the authority, and you're free to use whatever resources actually help you learn each topic, endorsed or not.
A practical way to use this: print or copy the specification's topic list and turn it into a checklist. Tick off each topic only once you can answer past-paper questions on it, not once you've read about it.
A worked example. Take A-level Maths, one of the more commonly resat subjects and one that self-studies reasonably well because it's assessed entirely by written exam with no coursework. The specification breaks the subject into pure, statistics and mechanics content, examined across three papers. A specification-first plan means working through pure maths topics first, since they underpin the other two strands, then statistics and mechanics in parallel once the pure foundations are solid — checking, topic by topic, that each one appears on the actual specification list rather than assuming a textbook's order matches. - Sit past papers under timed conditions at regular intervals throughout the year, not just in the final weeks — this surfaces gaps in your knowledge while there's still time to fix them, and builds the exam-technique familiarity that only comes from repeated practice under real conditions.
- Read examiner reports alongside the papers, where your board publishes them. These explain exactly where students commonly lose marks and why — often on things that look fine to you but aren't quite what the mark scheme rewards. This is one of the most underused resources available to a self-studying candidate, because it's essentially the exam board telling you its own grading patterns.
- Revisit weak topics with fresh past-paper questions, rather than just rereading notes, so you're testing recall and application rather than recognition.
This approach also naturally paces the year: if you're not sitting regular past papers, it's very easy to feel like you're "on track" right up until you sit a full paper for the first time and discover you aren't.
Arrange marking and feedback — deliberately, not incidentally
In a normal classroom, marked feedback happens as part of the course: a teacher marks your essays, checks your working, and tells you where the mark scheme disagrees with your instinct. None of that happens automatically when you're studying alone, and self-marking against a mark scheme only gets you so far, because it's easy to be generous with yourself on borderline answers.

A resit year self-studied alone is genuinely harder in some specific, predictable ways, and it's worth naming them rather than glossing over them:
- Discussion-based learning is hard to replace. Subjects that benefit from debate, live Q&A, or working through a problem out loud with someone else lose something in solo study. If your subject leans this way, put extra effort into finding even occasional access to a study partner, tutor, or online forum for your board and subject.
- Getting stuck has no automatic fix. In a classroom, a confusing topic gets a hand raised and answered within the lesson. Alone, it can eat an entire afternoon or get quietly avoided. Build in a way to ask questions — even an occasional tutoring session set aside specifically for "the topics I got stuck on this month" can prevent this compounding.
- Practical and coursework components may not be available to you at all. Where this plan can't help on its own
There's one thing a study plan, however good, can't fix by itself: whether the resit is actually the right call for a specific university offer or course requirement. A student who narrowly missed an offer might need a higher grade in the same subject, a different combination of subjects, or — depending on the course — a conversation with the university about whether a resit changes anything at all. That's a question for the university's admissions team or UCAS, not something a revision plan settles. It's worth having that conversation early in the resit year, not after months of work, so the plan is actually aimed at what's needed.
