Six questions. Twelve minutes. One clock. Once it starts, it does not pause. The sprint exists because the honest alternative to a sixty-minute past paper on a Tuesday evening is not a shorter paper — it is no paper at all. Twelve minutes is a length a tired eleven-year-old will actually agree to, and short enough that the clock still means something.
What it is
In the Maths Challenge room, under Practise, the sprint describes itself in six words:
Six questions, twelve minutes, one clock
No calculator, as with everything else here. The questions come from the same UKMT past-paper bank as a full paper, at whichever level the Junior/Intermediate switch is set to — Junior for Year 8 and below, Intermediate for Years 9 to 11.
It is sealed, and that is the point
Before anything starts, the room gives a warning rather than a countdown:
Once you start, the clock runs and it doesn't pause. Find somewhere quiet first.
Your child then chooses Start the clock or Not now. Both are real answers. "Not now" is the correct one if a sibling is in the room or dinner is in four minutes, and offering it explicitly is how the sprint stays honest — the alternative is a child starting a timed run they were always going to abandon.
Only one sprint can be open at a time. If there is one already, the room says so plainly: "You've got one on the go." There is no starting a fresh sprint to escape a bad one.

A sprint is not a small past paper and it is not trying to be. A full paper trains something a sprint cannot: pacing across an hour, the decision at the five-minute call, the discipline of the all-questions grid. If your child has never sat one, sit one — under the clock covers what that looks like.
What a sprint trains is the thing that actually decays between practice sessions: reading a Maths Challenge question quickly and correctly. Twelve minutes, twice a week, keeps that warm in a way one paper a month does not.

Every wrong answer still lands somewhere
A sprint is short, but it is not throwaway. The wrong answers go where all wrong answers go: into the clinic, each filed under a named mistake with a count beside it, not under the paper it came from. The clinic's own subtitle is "Not by paper. By what keeps going wrong."

When it runs out of material
The bank is finite, and rather than serve your child a question they have already met, the sprint tells the truth:
You've met every question a sprint could ask you right now. Type in a paper you sat at school, or work the clinic — new ones open up as the bank grows.
Both of those are real routes, not consolation prizes.

Work the clinic. The re-traps there draw on questions that set the same trap, so a mistake with a count of ×4 has its own supply of material independent of the sprint bank.
What you can do as a parent
- Make it a routine, not an event. Twelve minutes has a natural slot in most weeknights; an hour does not.
- Respect "Not now." A child who declines a sealed clock because the house is loud is exercising exactly the judgement you want on the day.
- Do not read the six-question mark as a signal. Six questions is a small sample, and the room deliberately offers no readiness score, percentile or predicted certificate anywhere. The wrong answers are the signal.
- Save the full papers. Twelve loaded years per competition is a finite resource. Sprints keep the week ticking over without spending them.
