Far fewer than most people assume. The number is not set by how much of the curriculum exists — it is set by how many cards a child can honestly maintain, every day, without the pile becoming a reason to stop.

Start from the daily budget, not the syllabus

The instinct is to work forwards: here is the KS3 curriculum, how many cards would cover it? That produces a number in the thousands and a plan nobody follows.

Work backwards instead. A child can sustain roughly five to seven minutes of review a day — which is about twenty cards. That is the budget. Everything else follows from it.

A mature card at our 90-day ceiling costs about four reviews a year, so a hundred mature cards contribute a bit over one review a day. New cards are the expensive ones, appearing at 1 day, then 6, then 15. So a collection of a few hundred cards, with a steady trickle of new ones, sits comfortably inside the budget. A collection of two thousand does not, and the consequence is not chaos — the cap holds — but new material queues behind old, and the whole thing starts to feel like an obligation rather than a tool.

Three to eight cards per topic

For a topic your child has actually been taught, three to eight cards is usually right. Fewer than three and you have probably missed the thing that will be forgotten; more than eight and you are turning a lesson into a transcript.

What earns a card:

  • A definition with one correct answer. When is a fraction in its simplest form?
  • A rule or condition. What has to be true before you can cancel a fraction?
  • A why-question with a single crisp answer. Why does dividing top and bottom by the same number leave the value unchanged?
  • A fact that must be instantly available, not derived.

What does not earn a card:

  • Anything your child can work out from something else they know. Derivable material is better derived than memorised.
  • A whole worked procedure. Procedures are learned by doing them.
  • Anything they did not understand in the lesson. A card cannot install an idea, only test one.
  • Padding. If a card exists because a topic felt like it deserved five, it will be a bad card.

Why fewer, better cards beats more

Two reasons, one obvious and one less so.

Obviously: every card is a recurring cost, forever, until it is retired. A card added casually is a small daily tax on your child.

Less obviously: a bloated collection hides the useful signal. Part of the point of this system is that a card failed repeatedly tells the tutor something — this child has a misconception here. In a collection of eight hundred marginal cards, that signal is noise. In a collection of two hundred cards that all matter, it is a clear message.

Which is why cards need an ending

A collection that only grows eventually stops being maintainable regardless of how carefully you add to it. Two levers keep the number honest:

Locking in what is learned. A card your child genuinely knows can be finished — it leaves the queue for good while keeping its star. This is the main mechanism by which a collection stays a sensible size while the child's knowledge grows.

Putting away what is not useful. Topics move on. A card about something no longer relevant should leave, and can come back if it turns out to matter.

Used properly, a child's active collection can stay in the low hundreds indefinitely, while their total collection — including everything locked in — grows all year. That is the right shape: the daily cost stays flat, the record of achievement keeps growing.

What this looks like in practice

A rough sketch of a Year 8 student using this well across a term:

  • Twelve tutoring sessions across two subjects, most producing 3–5 cards → around 45 new cards.
  • Daily review of 8–15 cards, mostly the recent ones.
  • By the end of term, perhaps 8–12 cards locked in as genuinely mastered.
  • A handful put away as no longer relevant.
  • Net active collection after a year: two or three hundred cards, all of them earning their place.

That is a modest-sounding number that represents a genuinely useful body of instantly-available knowledge — and, critically, a habit that is still alive in July.
