We built a flashcard deck for each UKLO Foundation-tier year from 2010 to 2025, plus a starter toolkit — seventeen decks in total — each one distilling the linguistic idea behind that year's puzzles. Laid side by side, a clear pattern emerges: a handful of concepts dominate, a second tier shows up regularly, and a long tail of specialist ideas appears only occasionally. Here's what that spread actually looks like, and what it implies for how a child should spend their practice time.

What "recurring" means here
To be clear about what we're claiming: the surface puzzle is different every year — a different invented or lesser-known language, a different everyday scenario (family words, numbers, a shopping list, a metro map). What recurs is the underlying linguistic idea a child needs to recognise and apply. A puzzle about kinship terms in one year and a puzzle about a Bantu-style noun-class system in another can both be testing agreement — the same reasoning move, wearing a different costume.
The two ideas that dominate
Two concepts appear in roughly 16 of the 17 years we mapped — by a clear margin the most recurring ideas in Foundation-tier material:
Naming the word classes. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, and — less obviously — determiners and articles. Almost every puzzle needs a child to correctly identify what kind of word they're looking at before anything else can be worked out, because the grammar rules that follow (agreement, case, word order) are all keyed to word class.
Working out sentence structure. This covers word order labelling (SOV, SVO, VSO, OSV) and, closely related, case marking as the alternative way a language can show who did what to whom without relying on order at all. Between them, these two ideas underpin nearly every puzzle we reviewed.
If a family only has time to prepare two things, our concepts guide recommends starting exactly here. A typical card testing the first looks like: "Nouns name things, verbs name actions, adjectives describe nouns and pronouns stand in for nouns" — deceptively simple, and the foundation everything else in a puzzle is built on. A typical card testing the second looks like: "Japanese and Turkish put the verb last. What is the three-letter label for that word order?" — the kind of question that opens a huge fraction of Foundation papers, because until a child knows the order, they can't safely read anything else in the data.
The regular second tier
A step below the top two, four ideas show up consistently without being universal:
- Word-building (roots, prefixes, suffixes, and how morphemes stack) — around 13 of 17 years. A representative card: "The smallest piece of a word that carries its own meaning" — the definition of a morpheme, which is the unit almost every word-building puzzle is secretly asking a child to isolate.
- Precise terminology (naming the tool correctly: alphabet vs syllabary vs logographic script, transliteration vs translation, phoneme vs letter) — around 12 of 17 years. A representative card: "Rewriting a word letter by letter from one alphabet into another" — transliteration, which puzzles built around metro maps or shop signs in an unfamiliar script rely on constantly.
- Agreement (a verb or adjective copying its partner's person, number or gender) — around 10 of 17 years. A representative card: "In a made-up language, 'ruma bela' is 'red house' and 'rumi beli' is 'red houses'. Why did the word for 'red' change its ending as well?" — the adjective is copying the noun, which English adjectives never do.
- Cross-referencing details across a text, and separately, working out words from context — each around 10 of 17 years. A representative card for the latter: "English 'night' and German 'Nacht' descend from the same ancient word. A word related to a word in another language like this is called a…?" — cognates, one of the fastest routes into an unfamiliar puzzle language when it exists.
These are worth solid, regular practice — not the top priority, but far too common to skip.
The occasional specialists
A longer tail of ideas appears in only around 3 of the 17 years each: keeping tense consistent (spotting the ending or word that marks "yesterday" versus "now"), the active/passive distinction and its unfamiliar cousin the ergative (where the subject of a verb with an object gets a special ending, and everything else looks the same), consonant clusters and other sound-level detail (why "spl" in "splash" behaves differently across languages), historical word origins and language families (Old Norse's fingerprints on English "sky" and "egg"), and word connotation — where one language draws a fine distinction that English squashes into a single word, or vice versa, like a dozen words for different kinds of rain where English needs a whole phrase for most of them.
Three appearances out of seventeen sounds thin, but there's a silver lining: each of these ideas is narrow enough to learn properly in a single sitting, and when a puzzle does lean on one, it's often worth several marks because a child who's never met the idea has to reason it out from nothing under time pressure — while a child who has met it recognises the shape immediately and moves straight to applying it.
What this means for how a child should prepare
The practical takeaway is a weighting, not a checklist to complete once. Spend the most repeated practice on word classes and sentence structure, because they underpin almost everything else. Give word-building and terminology regular attention. Touch agreement and context-reading often enough that they stay fresh. And don't skip the specialist tail just because it's rare — a quick pass through each one means nothing in the exam is arriving completely cold.
