No two years of Top of the Bench look identical on the surface, but underneath the surface, a small set of KS3 chemistry topics shows up again and again. We built our own Top of the Bench flashcard decks — a general toolkit deck plus seven decks matched to individual years from 2016 to 2025 — and tagged every card against a fixed chemistry topic list. That gives something more concrete than a gut feeling about "what tends to come up": an actual count, deck by deck, of which topics recur. The eight topics that turn up in three or more decks

Out of our eight decks, eight specific chemistry topics each appear in at least three separate years — not just once, and not clustered in a single deck. Here's the full list, with how many of the eight decks each one appears in.

Three topics — group 1, combustion and general metal properties — top the list at four decks each, the most consistent showing of anything we tracked. It's worth being honest about what that does and doesn't mean: it isn't a guarantee any particular topic will appear on a future paper, since heats are now organised locally and vary by region (see our full guide to Top of the Bench for the current administrative picture). What it does show is that these are exactly the topics a KS3 chemistry curriculum keeps returning to, in a form a competition paper can turn into a sharp question — which makes them a sound place to put revision time regardless of what any single future paper contains.

The pattern holds even more strongly at the strand level

Zoom out from individual topics to the six broader strands they sit in, and the consistency gets even more striking. Across all eight of our decks:

  • Every single deck includes at least one periodic-table card (8 of 8) and at least one chemical-reactions card (8 of 8).
  • Acids and alkalis appears in 7 of 8 decks.
  • Atoms, elements and compounds, and particles and states of matter, each appear in 6 of 8 decks.
  • Earth and atmosphere is the outlier — it appears in only 3 of 8 decks, which makes sense given it's the strand most likely to be genuinely tied to a specific year's theme (environmental questions, greenhouse gases, fossil fuels) rather than being a year-independent core skill.

Put another way: the periodic table and reaction chemistry aren't topics that happen to come up often — they are, in our data, topics that come up in every single year we have cards for. If a family only has time to revise two things before a heat, those two are the safest bet by a wide margin.

Same skill, different flavour — why the years still feel different

None of this means every year is interchangeable. Look closely at how the same recurring topic shows up differently from year to year, and each paper clearly has its own character. Group 1 reactivity, for instance, gets tested very differently across decks: one card asks which of lithium, sodium and potassium reacts most violently with water; another (from a different year) asks about lithium's role in rechargeable batteries; another asks about the lilac flame colour of burning potassium. Same underlying topic — group 1's reactivity trend — but a different angle each time.

The same is true of combustion: one deck's card is about the fire triangle and fire safety, another year's is about carbon monoxide poisoning from a blocked flue, another is about reading a candle-in-a-jar oxygen experiment. The topic recurs; the specific question, the real-world hook, and the exact skill being tested (recall a fact, apply a rule, interpret an experiment) all change.

That's the genuinely useful insight here: revising a recurring topic means understanding the underlying chemistry well enough to answer it from several angles — not memorising one specific phrasing of one specific question. A child who has only ever seen "which halogen is most reactive?" phrased one way will be thrown by "why does fluorine attack glass?" even though it's the identical fact.

What this means for how you actually prepare

Because the paper's exact theme and format vary year to year — and because heats are no longer run to a single fixed national calendar — the reliable move isn't trying to predict this year's specific theme. It's building genuinely solid recall of the topics that show up regardless of theme: group 1 and group 7 trends, metal properties and structure, combustion, pH and acids, and the separating techniques. Does each year of Top of the Bench have a completely different topic?

Each year's paper takes on its own flavour — one year's cards lean more on atmospheric gases, another's on separation techniques, another's on structure and bonding. But the underlying KS3 chemistry skills being tested — periodic trends, reaction types, particle behaviour, acids and alkalis — repeat constantly underneath that surface variation.
