There's no five-year stack of BPhO Year 7/8 or Junior Physics Challenge past papers to work through — BPhO doesn't publish past questions from these online quizzes, only sample PDFs. That rules out the most obvious KS3-competition prep strategy before it starts. But it's worth sitting with why that's not actually a loss: both challenges are two 25-minute papers of individual, fact-based questions — a quiz, in BPhO's own words, not an exam — and a quiz of individual facts is precisely what spaced repetition is built to prepare for.
Why the format points at facts, not marathon problem-solving
The Year 7/8 Physics Challenge is 25 questions in 25 minutes; the Junior Physics Challenge is 30 questions in 25 minutes. Do the maths and that's roughly a minute a question — enough time to read a scenario, recognise which physics idea it's testing, and answer, but not enough for a multi-step derivation from first principles. That structure rewards a child who can retrieve the right fact fast far more than one who can work it out slowly but correctly.
Fast, confident retrieval is exactly what spaced repetition trains. Rather than reading a topic once and hoping it sticks, spaced repetition shows a fact again right as it's about to be forgotten, which is the point at which recalling it does the most to cement it. Reviews then space out further and further as a fact gets more solid — which is also why starting early matters more than cramming hard at the end.
Walking through the deck
Our BPhO challenge toolkit is twelve cards, one fact each, covering the ground BPhO facts every KS3 child should know walks through in full:
- Forces — balanced forces on a steady-speed skydiver, speed = distance ÷ time, and pressure = force ÷ area.
- Gravity — mass vs weight, and calculating weight from mass and Earth's gravitational field strength (about 10 N/kg).
- Energy — energy stores and transfers, and what the "kilo-" prefix means on a power rating.
- Electricity — which meter measures what and how it's wired, and why series and parallel circuits behave so differently when something breaks.
- Sound — why sound needs a medium and light doesn't, and the speed of sound in air (about 340 m/s) for thunder and echo questions.
- Matter — density, and why a block of wood floats while a same-sized block of iron sinks.

What this looks like in practice
A few minutes, a few times a week, is a better shape for this than one long session. Because the point of spaced repetition is a growing gap between reviews, starting a month or two before the challenge window (roughly late April to mid-May for both) gives the facts time to move from "just learned" to "properly stuck" — which is worth far more on the day than a single evening of reading through everything at once. Why re-reading notes isn't the same thing
It's worth being clear about why this differs from the more familiar approach of re-reading a textbook chapter or a set of class notes the week before. Re-reading feels productive because the material feels familiar on the page — but recognising a fact when you see it and retrieving it cold, from a scenario that doesn't name the topic, are different skills, and a BPhO question always demands the second one. A flashcard forces retrieval rather than recognition: there's no page of context to lean on, just the question and a graded attempt at the answer. That gap between "I recognised that" and "I could have said that" is exactly what a 25-minutes-for-25-questions paper exposes.
Keep the sessions light. These are, deliberately, low-stakes quizzes — the goal of preparation is familiarity and confidence, not a forced march through content. A child who's genuinely comfortable with the twelve facts above walks into the challenge with the one advantage that actually matters under a 25-minute clock: not having to think twice.
