The Biology Challenge can look, from the outside, like an extra subject bolted onto an already full timetable. It isn't. Every one of the topics it draws on — cells, the carbon cycle, digestion, the heart, chromosomes, natural selection, pathogens, classification — is mainstream KS3 or early GCSE biology, the same ground a Year 9 or 10 student covers in ordinary lessons. Cells and organisation

Two of our cards sit squarely in this strand: how a leaf is organised to photosynthesise, and how a root hair cell is shaped to absorb water and minerals. This is foundational KS3 biology — the idea that cells are specialised for a job, that cells build tissues, tissues build organs, and organs build organ systems. A Biology Challenge question about the leaf as an organ isn't testing anything beyond what a Year 9 lesson on cell specialisation already covers.

Interdependence, ecosystems and material cycles

The carbon cycle and food chains both live here — how carbon moves between the air, plants, animals and back again, and how energy moves up a food chain from producer to top predator. Every Year 9 or 10 student meets ecosystems, food webs and the carbon cycle as a named curriculum topic; the Biology Challenge simply asks the same ideas in multiple-choice form, under a little time pressure.

Structure and function of the human body

Four of our twelve cards sit in this one strand: digestive enzymes, anaerobic respiration, the circulatory system, and blood components. This is the "how does my own body actually work" strand of KS3 biology, and it's usually the one students find most naturally interesting — which is probably why the Biology Challenge leans on it so heavily. Amylase in saliva, the left ventricle pumping blood round the body, red blood cells carrying oxygen: none of this is competition-specific knowledge. It's the human body topic every Year 9 covers.

Genetics and evolution

Two separate but connected ideas show up here: chromosomes and inheritance (why a gamete carries 23 chromosomes rather than 46), and natural selection (why bacteria become resistant to antibiotics). Genetics and evolution is one of the big ideas running through the KS3 science curriculum, and both halves of it — the mechanism of inheritance and the mechanism of evolution — are core content, not enrichment.

Health and disease

Pathogens — bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists, and why only bacterial infections respond to antibiotics — sit in the health strand of KS3 biology. This is also directly relevant life knowledge: knowing why a doctor won't prescribe antibiotics for flu is as useful outside an exam as inside one.

Classification and the tree of life

The five vertebrate classes — fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals — are part of the "diversity, classification and the tree of life" content that runs through KS3 biology, often taught alongside evolution because classification and common ancestry are two sides of the same idea. A Biology Challenge question about amphibians being the bridge between water and land habitats is testing exactly this strand.

Why some of this feels a little ahead of Year 9

A couple of these topics — chromosome numbers, natural selection as a mechanism, the detail of enzyme specificity — sit right at the KS3/GCSE boundary, taught in depth as Year 9 moves into the early stages of GCSE biology. That's normal, not a sign the Biology Challenge has strayed outside the syllabus: KS3 and GCSE content overlaps rather than switching over on a fixed date, and a Year 10 student sitting the Challenge will usually have met these ideas more than once by then. If a topic feels unfamiliar, that's a cue to check what's actually been covered in class recently, not a sign the competition is testing something unreasonable.

Why this framing matters for revision

Because none of this is extra content, the right way to think about Biology Challenge preparation isn't "learn a new syllabus" — it's "get genuinely fluent in the biology you're already being taught." A child who understands their KS3 lessons well is already most of the way to being ready for the paper; the competition just asks that understanding to work fast, under a little pressure, in multiple-choice form.

That reframing matters for a parent too. There's no separate Biology Challenge curriculum to source, no past-paper archive to work through (UK Biology Competitions doesn't publish past papers with their answers), and no reason to treat it as one more thing competing for revision time. The most useful thing you can do is make sure ordinary KS3 biology is genuinely secure — and the most efficient way to check that is regular, spaced review rather than one big read-through. Is the Biology Challenge based on a separate syllabus from what my child learns in school?

No. Every topic we've seen in Biology Challenge-style material — cells, ecosystems, the human body, genetics, evolution, health, classification — maps directly onto standard KS3 biology strands. There's nothing to learn beyond what school already covers.

So does my child need to do anything extra to prepare?

Not really, beyond making sure their existing KS3 biology is solid rather than shaky. The competition rewards genuine understanding of core topics more than it rewards extra knowledge, so time is best spent consolidating what's already being taught.

Which KS3 topics come up most in Biology Challenge-style questions?
