Verbal reasoning is the paper that unsettles parents most, because it is the one that looks least like school. Your child has maths lessons and English lessons; nobody teaches "if the code for CAT is DBU, what is the code for DOG?". Seen cold, a VR paper reads like a puzzle magazine with a stopwatch attached, and the natural parental response is either panic-buying practice books or deciding the whole thing is an unlearnable IQ test.

Neither response survives contact with how the questions are actually made. VR questions are written to recipes — a small set of well-understood families, each with a fixed internal logic — and the paper your child sits will be assembled from those families. This article walks through them: what each type looks like, what it is really testing, and where the marks genuinely come from.

One caveat before the tour: not every 11+ includes verbal reasoning at all. Essex's CSSE papers, for instance, test English and maths only. Confirm what your area tests before investing in any of this.

The four families

GL Assessment, which sets the tests in most grammar areas, has historically drawn on a bank of around 21 verbal reasoning question types. Twenty-one sounds daunting; in practice they cluster into four families, and a child who understands the families finds each new type a variation rather than a fresh mystery.

1. Vocabulary questions — the word-hoard family

The most direct family: questions that simply probe how many words your child knows, and how precisely.

  • Synonyms and antonyms. Pick the two words closest in meaning, or most opposite, from a list.
  • Odd ones out. Which two words do not belong with the other three?
  • Multiple meanings. Find the word that fits with both of two given pairs — the word that means both "part of a tree" and "part of a bank" (branch).
  • Word connections and analogies. Kitten is to cat as cub is to — the relationship, not the words, is the question.

There is no technique to teach here beyond reading the question carefully; the ceiling is vocabulary itself. This family is why VR rewards early readers and why no autumn of drilling substitutes for years of books. It is also where a child's precision gets tested: knowing roughly what reluctant means is not enough when hesitant and unwilling are both on offer.

2. Word-manipulation questions — the letters-as-objects family

These treat words as physical things to be taken apart and reassembled.

  • Hidden words. A four-letter word is concealed across the boundary of two adjacent words in a sentence — "a difficult birth and a long night" hides than — and the child must find it.
  • Move a letter. Take one letter from the first word, insert it into the second, and leave two new real words.
  • Compound words. Which pair joins to make a real word?
  • Word building and completion. Find the three-letter word hidden inside a longer one to complete a sentence sensibly.

What is being tested is systematic scanning — checking each possibility in order rather than staring hopefully at the whole line. Children who jump around lose time and miss answers; children taught to work left to right, boundary by boundary, find these become almost mechanical. This is the most coachable family, which is precisely why it separates prepared from unprepared children rather than able from less able ones.

3. Code and sequence questions — the maths-in-disguise family

  • Letter codes. Words encoded by shifting each letter along the alphabet, forwards or backwards; your child decodes or encodes using the pattern.
  • Letter series. Continue the sequence AZ, BY, CX… — two interleaved patterns moving in opposite directions.
  • Letters for numbers. Letters stand for values; the child substitutes and calculates.
  • Number series. Ordinary numeric sequences, on a nominally verbal paper.

Parents are often surprised that a good slice of the verbal reasoning paper is arithmetic wearing a costume. A child with instant number bonds and times tables, who can count steps along an alphabet line without losing their place, has most of what this family needs. The standard technique — writing the alphabet across the top of the rough-work space and physically counting hops — turns codes from a feat of mental gymnastics into bookkeeping. Familiarisation materials permit and expect this kind of method; a child who has practised it is calm where an unprepared child is frantic.

4. Logic questions — the deduction family

  • Ordering and ranking. "Anna is taller than Ben but shorter than Chloe…" — assemble the facts, answer the question.
  • True-from-statement deductions. Given a short scenario, which conclusion must be true — as opposed to merely plausible?
  • Word-sum or date problems. Small structured puzzles requiring careful reading more than any advanced idea.

This family punishes exactly one thing: answering from general knowledge or vibes instead of from the stated facts. The skill — separating "what the passage says" from "what I happen to believe" — is the same discipline that comprehension papers reward, and it matures noticeably between ages nine and eleven. Practice here is less about speed and more about the habit of pointing at the line that proves the answer.

What the paper is really testing

Strip away the formats and VR measures three underlying capacities: vocabulary breadth, systematic method, and working accurately at speed. That decomposition matters because the three respond to completely different preparation on completely different timescales.

  • Vocabulary is the slow variable — years of reading, conversation, and being read to. It is the genuine ceiling on the score and the least tutorable part of the paper. If your child is in Year 4, the single best VR preparation available is a library card and a bedtime reading habit; a small notebook of met-and-liked words costs nothing and compounds.
  • Method is the fast variable — weeks, not years. Each question family has a recipe (scan boundaries; write the alphabet out; build the ordering diagram), and familiarisation materials plus a modest amount of practice teach them. This is where preparation genuinely moves marks, and it plateaus: once the recipes are second nature, more drilling adds little.
  • Speed and accuracy under time sit in between — built by spaced, timed practice in the months before the test, best in short doses. The pacing skill (move on, come back, keep the answer sheet aligned) is shared with every other 11+ paper.

The honest summary for a planning parent: start the reading years early, add the technique in Year 5, and add the clock last. Done in that order, VR preparation is unfrightening and fairly brief. Done in reverse — timed papers first, vocabulary never — it produces the anxious, plateaued experience that gives the paper its reputation.
