Here is the reassuring truth most 11+ maths guides bury: the exam almost never tests content your child has not met at school. Grammar school tests are built on the primary national curriculum, and because most are sat in the first weeks of Year 6, they can only fairly assume what was taught by the end of Year 5. What the exam does — and does deliberately — is take that familiar content and change everything around it: the time available, the wording, the number of steps, and the child's certainty about which method to use.

Understanding that distinction changes how you prepare. A family that believes the 11+ tests "harder maths" buys workbooks full of new content and makes the child anxious about material nobody expects them to know. A family that understands the 11+ tests fluency under pressure with known maths practises differently — and usually more calmly.

What the papers actually contain

The detail varies by region and provider, but the broad shape of 11+ maths is stable:

  • Number work. Place value, the four operations, negative numbers, factors and multiples, fractions, decimals and percentages, and moving between them. This is the backbone of every paper.
  • Worded problems. Money, time, measures, timetables, and "real life" scenarios that require two, three or four steps — and where the first task is working out what the question is actually asking.
  • Fractions, ratio and proportion. Sharing in a ratio, scaling recipes, best-value comparisons. Proportional reasoning is one of the most reliable discriminators on these papers.
  • Geometry and measure. Perimeter, area, angles, properties of 2D and 3D shapes, coordinates, reflection and symmetry, reading scales.
  • Data. Tables, bar charts, pictograms, line graphs, and increasingly the interpretation questions that hide two steps inside one chart.
  • Pattern and pre-algebra. Sequences, function machines, missing-number problems, and "think of a number" puzzles — algebraic thinking without the letters.

None of this is beyond the primary curriculum. Some independent school papers push further at the top end — a genuinely hard final question is a design feature there, meant to separate the strongest candidates — but even those papers mostly discriminate on depth with primary material, not on secondary content.

The four real gaps between the classroom and the exam

1. Speed

Classroom maths gives a child time. The 11+ does not. A typical paper allows perhaps a minute per mark, sometimes less, and children who can do everything on the paper still underperform because they can do it all slowly. The unglamorous foundation here is number fluency: times tables, number bonds, and quick fraction–decimal–percentage conversions that happen without conscious effort. Every second not spent calculating 7 × 8 is a second available for thinking.

2. Multi-step wording

School practice tends to signal the method: a page headed "Long Division" contains long division. The 11+ removes the signpost. A single worded question might require the child to read carefully, extract three numbers, decide on an operation, perform it, then use the result in a second operation — and the most common failure is not calculation but reading: answering the question they expected rather than the one that was asked.

3. Unfamiliar presentation

Examiners take a familiar idea and dress it in unfamiliar clothes. Area presented as tiles needed for a floor. Ratio presented as a paint-mixing problem. A sequence presented as chairs around a growing line of tables. The maths is Year 5 maths; the costume is new. Children who have only met a topic in one format can fail to recognise it in another — which looks like a knowledge gap on the mark sheet but is really a flexibility gap.

4. Deciding without being told

This is the deepest one. In class, someone has usually decided what kind of problem this is before the child starts. In the exam, the child decides alone, question after question, under time pressure. That decision-making is a trainable skill, but it is trained by mixed practice — problems of unpredictable type, in random order — not by another page of a single topic.

What good preparation looks like

Working backwards from those four gaps, sensible preparation is neither mysterious nor brutal:

  • Little and often beats long and rare. Fifteen focused minutes most days builds fluency in a way a two-hour Sunday session never will. Fluency is a physiological thing — it comes from frequency, not intensity.
  • Fix number facts first. If tables and bonds are shaky, fix those before anything else. Everything on the paper leans on them.
  • Mix the practice. Once a topic is secure in isolation, it should immediately start appearing mixed in with everything else, so the child practises recognising problems, not just solving them.
  • Read the question aloud. For a child who keeps answering the wrong question, the cheapest fix is having them restate the question in their own words before touching a pencil. It feels slow. It saves marks.
  • Use papers sparingly and diagnostically. A practice paper is a thermometer, not a medicine. Use one to find the weak topics, spend two or three weeks on those topics, then measure again. Timing rehearsal matters in the final months; before that, accuracy first.
  • Keep the emotional temperature down. A ten-year-old who believes the family's happiness rides on a maths paper does worse maths. The evidence of your calm is worth marks.

The mistake to avoid: teaching ahead instead of deepening

The tempting shortcut — racing ahead into secondary school content — usually backfires. It costs time that fluency needed, it makes the child feel the exam requires knowledge they lack, and it does not match what the papers reward. Depth with Year 5 material — fast, flexible, applied in strange costumes — beats a thin layer of Year 7 material every time. The strongest 11+ candidates are not the ones who know the most maths; they are the ones who can deploy ordinary maths quickly, in whatever form it arrives.
