Every card in Space and gravity, Year 7: more practice
The whole deck, in order — so you can read it through before your child ever sees it.
- The Earth turns through 15° every hour. How many hours does it take to turn through 90°? (number only)
6
HintDivide the angle by the angle turned each hour.
Why90 ÷ 15 = 6 hours. A full turn of 360° takes 24 hours.
- What causes the Sun to appear to move across the sky during the day?
The spinning of the Earth
HintWhich body is really moving?
WhyThe Earth rotates once a day, so the Sun seems to cross the sky from east to west.
- Why is it dark at night?
Your part of the Earth is facing away from the Sun
HintHalf of the planet is always lit.
WhyAs the Earth turns, your place moves into the half that faces away from the Sun, which is in shadow.
- It is summer in the UK. What season is it in Australia?
Winter
HintThe two hemispheres lean in opposite ways.
WhyWhen the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, the southern hemisphere is tilted away from it.
- In June, the Sun is high in the sky in the UK. Why does the Sun's light warm the ground more then?
The light is spread over a smaller area
HintThink of a torch shone straight down or at a slant.
WhyA higher Sun means the rays hit the ground more steeply and are concentrated on a smaller area, so each square metre receives more energy.
- In which season are the days longest in the UK?
Summer
HintThink about which hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun.
WhyThe northern hemisphere leans towards the Sun in summer, so the Sun spends longer above the horizon. Longest day is about 21 June.
- Which planet is nearest to the Sun?
Mercury
HintIt is also the smallest planet.
WhyMercury orbits closest to the Sun.
- Which is the largest planet in the Solar System?
Jupiter
HintIt is a gas giant.
WhyJupiter is more massive than all the other planets combined.
- Which planet has the hottest surface?
Venus
HintA thick atmosphere traps heat.
WhyVenus's atmosphere of carbon dioxide traps heat, making it hotter than Mercury, even though Mercury is nearer the Sun.
- Which planet is furthest from the Sun?
Neptune
HintThe Solar System's last planet.
WhyNeptune is the eighth and outermost planet.

Keep what you learn
Here, nothing is saved. In your child’s own sky every card is scheduled — it comes back just before they’d forget it — and the professor who wrote it is one tap away.
