Every card in Grammar and vocabulary, Year 8: more practice
The whole deck, in order — so you can read it through before your child ever sees it.
- Which version means that ALL the students were late? A: The students who were late missed the bus. B: The students, who were late, missed the bus.
B
HintAsk whether some students were on time in each version.
WhyIn B the commas make 'who were late' extra information about all of them. In A it picks out only the late ones.
- Where does the comma go in 'Thank you Mr Khan'?
After 'you'
HintYou are speaking directly to someone.
WhyA comma separates the name of the person addressed from the rest of the sentence.
- What does the prefix 'mis-' mean in 'misread' and 'mislead'?
Wrongly
HintThink of 'mistake'.
Why'Mis-' means wrongly or badly. 'Misread' is to read wrongly.
- Is 'We were hungry, so we ate' a comma splice?
No — 'so' joins the clauses
HintLook for a joining word.
WhyThe conjunction 'so' links the two clauses, so the comma is correct. A splice has only a comma.
- Rewrite 'It was late, I went to bed.' using a semicolon.
It was late; I went to bed.
HintSwap one mark.
WhyA semicolon can join two closely linked complete sentences.
- In 'There was one thing she feared: spiders', what does the part after the colon do?
It reveals what the thing is
HintThe first part promises something.
WhyThe colon introduces an explanation or an example.
- Choose the correct verb: 'Neither of the boys (was/were) ready.'
was
HintWhich word is the true subject, 'boys' or 'neither'?
Why'Neither' is singular, so the verb is singular. 'Of the boys' is only extra detail.
- Which verb breaks the tense? 'We walked to the park and then we play on the swings.'
play
HintEverything else is already over.
WhyThe story is told in the past, so 'play' should be 'played'.
- In which situation is Standard English expected: a job application letter, or chatting to friends?
A job application letter
HintOne is formal; the other is relaxed.
WhyStandard English is the variety expected in formal writing. Dialect and informal speech are fine elsewhere.
- What is the term for the words and grammar of a particular region or social group, such as 'bairn' for a child in Scotland?
Dialect
HintA region's own variety of a language.
WhyA dialect is a full variety of language with its own words and grammar.

Keep what you learn
Here, nothing is saved. In your child’s own sky every card is scheduled — it comes back just before they’d forget it — and the professor who wrote it is one tap away.
