Every card in Health and disease, Year 8: more practice

The whole deck, in order — so you can read it through before your child ever sees it.

Scurvy causes bleeding gums and wounds that heal slowly. Which of these foods would help prevent it: oranges, white bread or butter?

Oranges

HintLook for the food rich in vitamin C.

WhyCitrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. Without it the body cannot make and repair the tissue that holds the gums and skin together.

2 KS3-BIOL-HEA-0048

Why does spending time outdoors in sunlight help to prevent rickets?

The skin makes vitamin D when it is exposed to sunlight

HintYour body can manufacture this nutrient itself, not just eat it.

WhyVitamin D helps the body absorb calcium for bones. Without it the bones can stay soft and bend.

3 KS3-BIOL-HEA-0049

Why does a lack of iron make a person tired and pale?

Iron is needed for haemoglobin, so the blood carries less oxygen

HintThink about what red cells carry around the body.

WhyHaemoglobin in red blood cells carries oxygen. Without enough iron the body cannot make it, so less oxygen reaches the cells.

4 KS3-BIOL-HEA-0050

What is meant by a deficiency disease?

A disease caused by a lack of a nutrient in the diet

HintIt is about something missing.

WhyScurvy, rickets and anaemia are examples. They are cured by eating enough of the missing nutrient.

5 KS3-BIOL-HEA-0051

Which gas in tobacco smoke reduces the amount of oxygen the blood can carry?

Carbon monoxide

HintIt also comes out of car exhausts.

WhyCarbon monoxide joins on to haemoglobin instead of oxygen. The heart must work harder to supply the body.

6 KS3-BIOL-HEA-0052

Alcohol is called a depressant. What does this mean?

It slows down the nervous system and brain activity

HintThink of the opposite of speeding up.

WhyMessages travel more slowly, so judgement, balance and reactions are affected.

7 KS3-BIOL-HEA-0053

Why does a unicellular organism not need organs?

The single cell carries out all the life processes itself

HintThink about how many cells it has.

WhyA bacterium or amoeba feeds, respires, excretes, grows and reproduces inside one cell.

8 KS3-BIOL-HEA-0054

How do bacteria reproduce?

By splitting in two (binary fission)

HintThe cell makes a copy of itself.

WhyA bacterium copies its genetic material and divides in two. In good conditions this can happen every 20 minutes or so.

9 KS3-BIOL-HEA-0055

Which gas made by yeast makes bread dough rise?

Carbon dioxide

HintIt forms bubbles in the dough.

WhyYeast respires the sugars in dough and releases carbon dioxide. The gas bubbles stretch the dough and it rises.

10 KS3-BIOL-HEA-0056

Why does an athlete need more energy from food than someone who sits at a desk all day?

The athlete uses more energy

HintThink about how much each person burns.

WhyEnergy needs depend on how active you are. Taking in more than you use is stored as fat, and less than you use makes you lose mass.

Keep what you learn

Here, nothing is saved. In your child’s own sky every card is scheduled — it comes back just before they’d forget it — and the professor who wrote it is one tap away.
