Every card in Health and disease, Year 7: more practice
The whole deck, in order — so you can read it through before your child ever sees it.
- What does a balanced diet contain?
The right amounts of all the nutrients, plus fibre and water
HintThink about all of them, not just one.
WhyA balanced diet gives enough of each nutrient for energy, growth and repair without too much or too little.
- A meal is only chips and fizzy drinks. Why is it not balanced?
It has too much fat and sugar and too little protein, vitamins and fibre
HintThink about what is in excess and what is missing.
WhyA balanced meal needs a mix of food groups. This one is high in energy but low in several nutrients the body needs.
- Why are fruit and vegetables important in a balanced diet?
They provide vitamins, minerals and fibre
HintThink about what fresh produce contains besides sugar.
WhyFruit and vegetables supply vitamins and minerals that keep the body working, plus fibre to keep the gut moving.
- Regularly eating much more fat and sugar than you need can lead to which health problem?
Obesity
HintUnused energy is stored.
WhyThe extra energy is stored as body fat. Obesity raises the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
- Which nutrient is a store of energy and also insulates the body?
Fat
HintThink of blubber.
WhyFat stores more energy gram for gram than carbohydrate, and a layer under the skin reduces heat loss.
- Which mineral does the body need for strong bones and teeth?
Calcium
HintMilk and cheese are rich in it.
WhyCalcium makes bones and teeth hard. Good sources include milk, cheese and green leafy vegetables.
- Which of these is the best source of protein: an apple, an egg or a bowl of rice?
An egg
HintProtein is used for growth and repair.
WhyEggs, meat, fish, beans and dairy foods are rich in protein.
- Which type of microbe is used to turn milk into yoghurt?
Bacteria
HintThese are single-celled microbes without a nucleus.
WhyBacteria feed on the sugar in milk and make lactic acid. This makes the milk thicken and taste sour.
- Penicillin, an antibiotic medicine, is made by which type of microbe?
A fungus (a mould)
HintAlexander Fleming noticed it growing on a petri dish.
WhyPenicillin comes from a mould called Penicillium. It kills bacteria but does not work on viruses.
- Are most microbes harmful or harmless to people?
Most are harmless or useful
HintThink of how many microbes there are compared with the number that cause disease.
WhyOnly a small proportion of microbes cause disease. Many live safely on and in us, or are used to make food and medicines.

Keep what you learn
Here, nothing is saved. In your child’s own sky every card is scheduled — it comes back just before they’d forget it — and the professor who wrote it is one tap away.
