Abolishing the slave tradeFree11:50Heddy Score 3 of 7, below the standard
What you need to know
- About 12.4 million Africans were forced onto ships, and around 2 million died during the Middle Passage.
- The triangular trade carried goods to Africa, enslaved people to the Americas and sugar and tobacco back to Europe.
- Olaudah Equiano's autobiography gives a first-hand account of capture and the horror of conditions below deck.
- Enslaved people resisted in many ways, from revolts on board to refusing food, and simply surviving was itself resistance.
- Britain abolished the trade in 1807 and slavery in 1833, though illegal trafficking carried on for years afterwards.
