Railways transform Britain
Railways transform BritainFree8:11Heddy Score 3 of 7, below the standard
What you need to know
- Railways were often the first time middle- and upper-class people came face to face with industrial machines.
- Faster travel 'shrank' distances and helped create suburbs, new towns and seaside trips.
- Before railways, towns kept their own local time; railways adopted Greenwich Mean Time in 1847, and it became standard time across Britain in 1880.
- Rail travel changed habits: passengers started reading on journeys, and some feared crashes and 'railway spine'.
- Contemporary writers' reactions show that people saw railways as a dramatic break with the past.
