What you need to know
- After the First World War, America entered a period of prosperity known as the Roaring Twenties.
- Radio advertising and new goods such as vacuum cleaners, washing machines and Ford's Model T fuelled a consumer boom.
- Banks lent freely, so many Americans bought goods on credit and even borrowed money to buy shares.
- Share prices rose much faster than real production, a warning sign of speculation.
- By 1929 production and wages were slowing while the stock market kept climbing.
