What you need to know

Farming happens at different scales: subsistence, small-scale and industrial, which is mostly grown for export.
Polyculture grows several crops, sometimes with animals, on the same land; rice-fish fields in South-east Asia recycle nutrients naturally.
Low-input systems like the Philippine rice terraces have lasted 2,000 years, while industrial monoculture relies on bought seed, fertiliser and herbicide.
Intensive industrial farming can degrade soil and drain aquifers; agriculture uses most of the world's fresh water.
Agroecology uses local knowledge and diverse, small-scale farming as a more sustainable way to feed people.
