Macbeth: how the tragedy is built
Macbeth: how the tragedy is builtFree11:13Heddy Score 3 of 7, below the standard
What you need to know
- The play can be remembered as five stages: temptation, the crown, insecurity, tyranny and death.
- The witches' prophecies and 'fair is foul' set up the theme of appearance and reality, and dramatic irony runs through the early acts.
- After Duncan's murder Macbeth's fear of Banquo's heirs drives him to further killings, including Macduff's family.
- The witches' later prophecies are equivocal, giving Macbeth false confidence before Birnam Wood moves and Macduff kills him.
- Macbeth's beheading mirrors his own killing of Macdonwald, and Malcolm's crowning restores order.
