What you need to know

  • The pancreas monitors the concentration of glucose in the blood.
  • When blood glucose rises, the pancreas releases insulin so cells take glucose in and the liver stores it as glycogen.
  • Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes have different causes, and the treatments differ too.
  • A controlled carbohydrate intake is one way to stop blood glucose rising too high.
  • For higher tier, glucagon raises blood glucose when the concentration has fallen too low.
