The tropical rainforest

The tropical rainforestFree4:25Heddy Score 3 of 7, below the standard

What you need to know

  • Tropical rainforests grow near the equator, where it is hot all year and rain falls in most months.
  • The forest has four layers: forest floor, understorey, canopy and emergent layer.
  • The canopy absorbs over 90% of the light, so only about 2% reaches the dark forest floor and few plants grow there.
  • Leaf litter rots quickly and heavy rain leaches nutrients away, so the soil is poor even though the forest above is so rich.
  • Emergent trees can reach 70 m and must cope with strong sun and wind.
