What you need to know
- Two ocean currents shape South Africa: the warm Agulhas current brings humid air to the east coast, and the cold Benguela current feeds rich fishing waters in the west.
- The narrow coastal plains rise steeply, so rivers are short and fast, with few natural harbours and no navigable routes inland.
- The Great Escarpment, highest in the Drakensberg at over 3,400 m, separates the coast from the high interior plateau.
- Most people and the biggest cities, Johannesburg and Pretoria, sit on the Highveld, while the Orange River supplies water for farming.
- Rainfall drops sharply westwards; the Karoo lies in a rain shadow and depends on groundwater for sheep farming.
