What you need to know
- A modifier is a word or phrase that changes or adds to the meaning of another part of the sentence.
- A modifier should sit next to the word it describes, or the sentence can say something absurd.
- Misplaced and dangling modifiers are both fixed by moving the phrase or rewording so it attaches to the right noun.
- Watch for ambiguous pronouns when you fix a sentence, so the reader knows who 'he' or 'she' refers to.
