What you need to know

  • You cannot look up every unfamiliar word, so guessing meaning from context is a vital reading skill.
  • First work out the word class (noun, verb, adjective or adverb), mainly from word order, as this narrows what the word can mean.
  • Next use the surrounding words to judge whether the word is positive or negative.
  • Connectives such as 'because' (cause) and 'although' (contrast) are strong clues to meaning.
  • Finally check your guess against a dictionary or by asking, which also helps you remember the word.
